Charles Clement Jr. did a lot of coffe-e shag ging, peddling of official papers and scraping and bowing in the Alabama State Leg islature. You might callj harman hicnois the lad. who is 14, a graduate student. Charlie, a personable lad with coal black hair, has just arrived in our midst. There was no mis taking him when he came in. He was stretching nigh onto six feet, almost as tall as his famous pappy who was with him. The boy, whose family now lives in Memphis, Tenn., was nominated to a Senate page job by Democratic Sen. Albert Gore. Back in the 1930s Charles the First, Charlie's pappy, was fa cus at the University of Ala bama as a tackle. Fact is, his dad was captain of the 'Baraa team that lost none during 'the season and went to the Rose Bowl in 1931 and licked the tar out of Washington State, 24 to 0. Played Football Charles II, incidentally, played a lot of tackle last year at East High School in Memphis and regrets that he can't do the same with the page boys in the Senate. They don't have a team, al though maybe they ought to. Although the younger Clem ent loves sports, he is a little more on the serious side. Al ready, he has a promise of a scholarship to Harvard when he finishes his first tour of the Senage Page School, for which he will get high . school credit, and goes -back to his own high school to get his diploma. "Boy," he said, "I want to get into the Harvard pre-Iaw school. I know I can make it." The con fidence of a champion! WASHDAY WAS DRUDGERY in Grandmother's day . long hours of sweating, straining, back-breaking work. Today's housewife uses a modern washer and dryer. Manufacturers have reduced washday chores to a turn of a dial., ' But to mass produce millions of washers and dryers, manufacturers must, be able to sell them by the millions. Only by advertising can a manu- , facturer talk to millions of people at one time. ADVERTISING TELLS the story of new home appliances r-. . and helps sell them: The more it sells, the more must be made keeping the production lines and the job! going. The result: newer, better home appliances at prices more people. can afford to pay. Advertising helped make the. difference in home appliances, and in our ' American way of life.
