UNSANITARY NINETEENTH CENTURY HOSPITALS ' A little more 'than a century ago (1843) a young whippersnap per by the name of Holmes pub- ivJt lished a naner on "The Con tagiousness of Puerperal Fev er." Doctor Holmes, Oli ver Wendell Holmes , was 34 years old at the time, and a Xr. Brady Poet to boot! In his essay, which must always re main a classic of medical litera ture, the courageous young man thank Heaven he was a young man said: ' "I have no wish to express any harsh feeling with regard to the painful subject ... . it is as a lesson rather than as a re proach that I call up the mem- , pry of these irreparable errors and wrongs'' in the practice of obstretics). "God forbid that any member of the profession to which she trusts her life, doubly precious at that event ful period, should hazard it negligently, unadvisedly, or selfishly." They were Hodge, Pro fessor of Obstetrics in the Uni versity of Pennsylvania and Meigs, Professor of Obstetrics in Jefferson Medical College. Boy, were these big shots sore! The castigations I have received from racketeers are trifling slaps on the wrist compared to the ridicule, satire, ponderous in vective ahd abuse these auto cratic spokesmen for the medical profession directed against young Dr. Holmes.
