Write to your state university
and ask what facilities it offers.
Even if you had to take some
work on the campus, you might
do this during the summer as a
part of your vacation.

the time, and a

his essay, which must always re
main a classic of medical litera
ture, the courageous young man
thank Heaven he was a young
man said:
' "I have no wish to express
any harsh feeling with regard
to the painful subject ... . it is
as a lesson rather than as a re
proach that I call up the mem-
, pry of these irreparable errors
and wrongs'' in the practice
of obstretics). "God forbid that
any member of the profession
to which she trusts her life,
doubly precious at that event

negligently, unadvisedly, or
selfishly." "
That's the prologue for a show
I wish I could have seen but
from the back row in the gal
lery, so I could leave hastily if it
became impossible to suppress a
guffaw. On more than one occa
sion this propensity has betrayed
me. .
The sheer gall of it! A callow
youth pleading for asepsis (sur
gical cleanliness) in obstetrics!
The reaction was typical. In min
uscule the same thing has hap
pened when I have informed the
public of alternatives for major
operation in selected causes of
hernia, hemorrhoids or infected
tonsils.
- At the time Holmes published
his essay two American obstetri
cians were pre-eminent. When
they pronounced their views no
one dareed to challenge them
until the young poet stepped for
ward. They were Hodge, Pro
fessor of Obstetrics in the Uni
versity of Pennsylvania and
Meigs, Professor of Obstetrics in
Jefferson Medical College.
Boy, were these big shots sore!
The castigations I have received
from racketeers are trifling
slaps on the wrist compared to
the ridicule, satire, ponderous in
vective ahd abuse these auto
cratic spokesmen for the medical
profession directed against young
Dr. Holmes.
But today Professors Hodge
and Meigs are remembered, if at
all, only for their blindness,
while the name of Oliver Wen
dell Holmes is linked in medical
history with the name of an even
younger manj Dr. Ignaz Philipp
Semmelweiss, a Hungarian, who
proved in Vienna hospitals that
most puerperal fever-childbed
septicemia or "blood poisoning"
could be prevented if the doc
tors, nurses and others attending
women in childbirth would dis-

visitors and sight-seers, instead
of being kept in bed or in bassi
net besides mother's bed, where
mother can nurse, move, cuddle,
care for and protect her baby to
make sure the baby won't be
mixed up with some other baby,
