Pieces of old and soiled blanketing climbed over and around objects of metal and china cracked, broken and whole. I was about to turn away when something made me take a e closer look at a bit of dark wood sticking out near the edge of thetable top. V The piece had the lovely color and rich grayi of cherry. The part of it I could see was flat, about the size and shape of a silver dollar and nearly three eighths of an inch thick. There was also a hole in the center approximately half an inch in diameter. From the condition of the let ters it was evident that if Fran cis Fletcher . had not made it back in 1773, someone else had done so at about that same time, It turned out to be nothing other than a pipe box for the long clay pipes of the church warden type, with a drawer for the tobacco, It was obviously meant to be hung on the wall, which is where I put it. What the value of it is I don't know. But an acquaintance of mine who has an old-fashioned New England kitchen has made me two offers, the second being for $50. As of now, if he gets up to $75 I think I may take it.
