a most uninviting pile of odds
and ends. Pieces of old and
soiled blanketing climbed over
and around objects of metal and
china cracked, broken and
whole.
I was about to turn away when
something made me take a
e closer look at a bit of dark wood
sticking out near the edge of
thetable top.
V The piece had the lovely color
and rich grayi of cherry. The
part of it I could see was flat,
about the size and shape of a
silver dollar and nearly three
eighths of an inch thick. There
was also a hole in the center
approximately half an inch in
diameter.
I removed a piece . of cherry
wood nearly 10 inches long with
beautifully scalloped edges.

was a drawer on the inside of
which I found the inscription
Francis Fletcher Fecit 1773.
From the condition of the let
ters it was evident that if Fran
cis Fletcher . had not made it
back in 1773, someone else had
done so at about that same time,
It turned out to be nothing
other than a pipe box for the
long clay pipes of the church
warden type, with a drawer for
the tobacco, It was obviously
meant to be hung on the wall,
which is where I put it.
What the value of it is I don't
know. But an acquaintance of
mine who has an old-fashioned
New England kitchen has made
me two offers, the second being
for $50. As of now, if he gets
up to $75 I think I may take
it. It would be a good profit on
my 75 cent purchase
"You don't realize what you
have," he said, "the unused
stamp is a legitimate counter
feit in other Words, a govern
ment-made reproduction of the
real thing. Lots of them were
back in 1875 for the Philadel
phia Exposition of 1876. The
best way to distinguish between
the two is by seeing where the
extension of the vertical lines
of the coat falls.
"In the real one like in this
used copy the extension of the
line of the coat, on the left there,
would touch the "T in ten. But
in your unused copy the line
of the coat points at the right
tip of the X'. There are also
several other tests."
The customer was thoughtful
for a moment.
"Okay," he said at length,
"I'll take it." Jim already was
counting out the $90.

NOTICE OF BOND SALE
NOTICE is hereby given that the
Board of Directors of the South Bear
Creek Sanitary - District. Jackson
County, Oregon, will receive sealed
bids at 8:00 o'clock p.m. on February
15, 1955 at Room 1, Brophy Building,
Medford, Oregon, for an issue of
Fifty-Eight Thousand Dollars - ($58,
000.00) of general obligation bonds of
said District in denominations of
$1,000.00 each. Said bonds shall be
dated January 1. 1955 and shall
mature as follows:
$2,000 on January 1st in each of the
years 1959 to 1964. incl.
$3,000 on January 1st in each of the
years 1965 to 1974, incl.
$4,000 on January 1st in each of the
years 1975 to 1978. incl.
Said borfds are to bear interest at
the rate specified by the successful
bidder, payable semi-annually on the
first days of January and July cf each
year at the First National Bank of
Portland (Oregon), Medford Branch.
All bonds which have not matured
are subject to call and redemption on
Jan. 1, 1965, and on any interest pay
ing date thereafter. Notice of call shall
be published in one issue of a news
paper published in Jackson County,
Oregon, at least 30 days prior to re
demption date.
Bidders offering to purchase said
bonds are invited to bid thereon for
not less than 98 To of par. Bids must
be in writing and unconditional and
accompanied by a certified check in
the amount of S1200.00 as evidence of
good faith on the part of the bidder.
Said deposit shall not draw interest
but will be forfeited to the District as
liquidated damages should the success
ful bidder withdraw his bid or fail or
neglect to complete his offer in ac
cordance with the terms thereof.
The Board of Directors of said Dist
rict reserve the right to reject any
and all bids and to waive any and all
informalities in the bids.
The District shall furnish and print
said bonds and will furnish the un
qualified approving opinion of Win
