legislators and Wives' Attend Official Events By Frances Littrell Wednesday eve of last week the state officials and members of the legislature and their wives were guests of the Oregon Farm , iCUClBUVU AU&V TV t. V. 275 of us present. The main dish was lamb curry served with rice, I thought, until they told us it was Buigar wheat. It is trans formed by cooking, drying, pearl ing and cracking and still it re tains most, of its nutritional values. It was a delicious meal and all prepared and served by their women members. .. -- mursday eve we went over xo the Lowrys to meet their little t .if injjUt- ma.- uicjr uiuu t vius alem when Shirley and Phil came. ..They: are dears, and we bad a fine time and decided they should call me Granny -Frances as Al's and my grandchildren and their friends do. Al had difficulty getting me to . leave them.. ; :;v.;,::.v-' , .Things were still a bit slow in the legislature last week, how ever the pace was faster than '. i- i i rm more meetings and - they were longer, too. The House was - Monday a. m. Al had business in ; Portland, so we decided to drive up. With the new highway v open, it's just a breeze into Port- "land from Salem. v While in Portland, we met Mamie Sleeter and her daughter-in-law,- Isabelle (Mrs. Richard Sleeter). Had a nice visit with them. h-'-: T ' ..Saturday was one of the few ' really nice days we have had, which; made it perfect" for Al, and he and Hobart Price had a -, golf game. - In the e vening we went to the Oregon. and. Oregon State basketbaU game in Cor- President Strand " of. 'Oregon State, and had : seats right on the floorr 'It was a very excit ing game.. Afterwards,' we were asked to have coffee in the sta dium lounge, where we ' met Dean and Mrs. Lemon, and other members of the faculty. We had s niceV visit with : Mrs. Strand. The Strand's "son comes to Med ford" for golf tournaments, and ': when there,, he, stays with the Bayard Getchels.r t i iThis year the legislature .has In its membership three eligible . . w mywjuwmt WVOW MI Dacneiors, - witn two in tne House. They are Representative R. Giesv from Monroe, and ReD- resentative William A. Grenf ell, ; Jr., who is ' second cousin of mine and-: Democrat. Vi In the Senate they have Senator Mark p. Hatfield, who just last week vas voted the first citizen of the Jyear1 by the Junior1 Chamber: of -: Commerce. tv - We, have had several Medford visitors,- ana it s sucn run to look up -and see ' a -face from home Mrs. - Bereth - Hopkins, (Jackson county clerk) was here last Friday to confer with Mr. Mann, Phil and Al in the interest of ; streamlining the laws per taining :to the absentee ballot, especially for the boys and girls in the service. Mrs. Smith is a small, dark, pretty woman with beautiful eyes. Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. - Roethlen, - Mrs. Oh- mart's mother, presided at the coffee urn.. Wives of all mem bers of the legislature were asked and also the women mem bers : of the House there are four ol them this year. Mrs: Ohmart is vivacious and attract ive and very young looking. It amazes you when she says her son is 17., At noon the Gearys and the two of us were, invited to have lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Am brose Sites on their , private car. Mr. Sites is president , of the Union Pacific. They are a most charming couple. He makes you think of Herbert Marshall, and Mrs. Sites is a handsome and charming woman. If was inter esting and fun, but we all had to go back to work, at 1:30. , Al is. concerned about the water resources bill and its effect upon Soutnem Oregon, v I'm studying the. report of the water resources committee now, and trying to condense it for hum It's no small task. , : There seems to besome con fusion about Al's committees. He is ' a member of the Com merce and Utilities, also Labor and Industry, and- he is vice chairman of the Highways com mittee. Next week there will be public hearings on several con troversial bills. - The Highways committee is to meet February 2 in the morning on the bill to relieve school dis tricts from paying state gas tax on school busses ' also called for February 2 in the afternoon is a hearing on the proposal to have the State Tax commission establish the valuation of public utilities' property on which both taxes y and rate makings are based. Tonight, there is one at 7:30 on raising unemployment benefits, and for that the C.I.O. has called a march on the Leg islature: That I'm going to hear and : see. f ? ? V-;; -': Oh yes, last night, the State officials and members of the legislature and their wives were guests; of the -1 Oregon Trades men's association for dinner at the Senator hotel. The dinner was perfect,- and' there were many lobbyists there. They are nice people, and they are profes sional' and business men and women -(yes, there ' are women lobbyists, too) when the leg islature is not in session. Gov? ernor Patterson referred to them as the 3rd House of the Legisla ture: '" 'r-'y '' '- " V-':V; f - Just as the introductions start ed, Phil . (Senator s Lowry) re ceived, a t telephone call from Medford; so when Governor Pat terson got up to' speak, he said, "Senator Lowry, you don't have to pay for being announced here; We do it for free." :. This, of course, brought applause, f ..' . It has been a busy week, both in - the legislature and socially. We "study and write letters, etc., in 5 thC evening after . we ' have been out. We, have found all the men and women of the legisla ture hard working and serious in their efforts for the State of Oregon. For many of them, and especially the young v couples with children, it's ' a sacrifice.' Some are living in: inadequate quarters and are paying exorbi tant prices for 1 them. We feel Oregon, is truly: - fortunate to have such fine men and women working for : her - and I'm I pleased my husband is due of them.
