Attend Official Events

Wednesday eve of last week
the state officials and members
of the legislature and their wives
were guests of the Oregon Farm

275 of us present. The main dish
was lamb curry served with rice,
I thought, until they told us it
was Buigar wheat. It is trans
formed by cooking, drying, pearl
ing and cracking and still it re
tains most, of its nutritional
values. It was a delicious meal
and all prepared and served by
their women members.

came. ..They: are dears, and we
bad a fine time and decided they
should call me Granny -Frances
as Al's and my grandchildren
and their friends do. Al had
difficulty getting me to . leave

, .Things were still a bit slow
in the legislature last week, how
ever the pace was faster than

more meetings and - they were
longer, too. The House was
- Monday a. m. Al had business
in ; Portland, so we decided to
drive up. With the new highway
v open, it's just a breeze into Port-

v While in Portland, we met
Mamie Sleeter and her daughter-in-law,-
Isabelle (Mrs. Richard
Sleeter). Had a nice visit with

..Saturday was one of the few
' really nice days we have had,
which; made it perfect" for Al,
and he and Hobart Price had a

went to the Oregon. and. Oregon
State basketbaU game in Cor-

ing game.. Afterwards,' we were
asked to have coffee in the sta
dium lounge, where we ' met
Dean and Mrs. Lemon, and other
members of the faculty. We had

ford" for golf tournaments, and

last Friday to confer with Mr.
Mann, Phil and Al in the interest

especially for the boys and girls

was in. His aunt, Mrs. Cecil Par
sons, is in the Bill Room of the

small, dark, pretty woman with

bers of the legislature were
asked and also the women mem
bers : of the House there are
four ol them this year. Mrs:
Ohmart is vivacious and attract
ive and very young looking. It
amazes you when she says her
son is 17.,
At noon the Gearys and the
two of us were, invited to have
lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Am
brose Sites on their , private car.
Mr. Sites is president , of the
Union Pacific. They are a most
charming couple. He makes you
think of Herbert Marshall, and
Mrs. Sites is a handsome and
charming woman. If was inter
esting and fun, but we all had
to go back to work, at 1:30. ,
Al is. concerned about the
water resources bill and its effect
upon Soutnem Oregon, v I'm
studying the. report of the water
resources committee now, and
trying to condense it for hum
It's no small task. , :
There seems to besome con
fusion about Al's committees.
He is ' a member of the Com
merce and Utilities, also Labor
and Industry, and- he is vice
chairman of the Highways com
mittee. Next week there will be
public hearings on several con
troversial bills. -
The Highways committee is to
meet February 2 in the morning
on the bill to relieve school dis
tricts from paying state gas tax
on school busses ' also called
for February 2 in the afternoon
is a hearing on the proposal to
have the State Tax commission
establish the valuation of public
utilities' property on which both
taxes y and rate makings are
based. Tonight, there is one at
7:30 on raising unemployment
benefits, and for that the C.I.O.
has called a march on the Leg
islature: That I'm going to hear
and : see. f ? ? V-;; -':
Oh yes, last night, the State
officials and members of the
legislature and their wives were
guests; of the -1 Oregon Trades
men's association for dinner at
the Senator hotel. The dinner
was perfect,- and' there were
many lobbyists there. They are
nice people, and they are profes
sional' and business men and
women -(yes, there ' are women
lobbyists, too) when the leg
islature is not in session. Gov?
ernor Patterson referred to them
as the 3rd House of the Legisla

- Just as the introductions start
ed, Phil . (Senator s Lowry) re
ceived, a t telephone call from
Medford; so when Governor Pat
terson got up to' speak, he said,
"Senator Lowry, you don't have
to pay for being announced here;
We do it for free." :. This, of
course, brought applause, f ..'
. It has been a busy week, both
in - the legislature and socially.
We "study and write letters, etc.,
in 5 thC evening after . we ' have
been out. We, have found all the
men and women of the legisla
ture hard working and serious
in their efforts for the State of
Oregon. For many of them, and
especially the young v couples
with children, it's ' a sacrifice.'
Some are living in: inadequate
quarters and are paying exorbi
tant prices for 1 them. We feel
Oregon, is truly: - fortunate to
have such fine men and women
working for : her - and I'm

Altrusa Project
By Employment
John Patton; manager of the
local office of the Oregon Em
ployment service, has given his
approval to the newest project
of Medford' Altrusa club, that of
financial aid to an older woman
Who needs training in order , to
obtain employment. ": ? '
."The development ef job op
ortunities for older workers pre
sents a number of knotty prob
lems," Mr. Patton states. "One
of the most difficult is that of
the older .woman ' ' seeking to
enter the labor market after a
long 'period without work'' ex
perience. The program of Altrusa
club is a worthwhile and well
planned attack oh this particular
problem." "' , 4
Altrusa is offering a grant of
$250 to train such a woman.
" When asked if this was a na
tional problem, Mr. Patton went
oh to say that thanks to the med
ical profession, people are living
longer than they -formerly did
in fact every fourth person in
the ,, United States is now 45
years of age or older. "It is evi
dent that we simply cannot af
ford to not use 'this tremendous
labor supply;" Mr; Patton con-

Dr. and Mrs. Samuel D. Ear
hart, 11 North Peach street, re
turned last week after a two
week trip to California and Mex
ico. The first week they spent
at Los Angeles while Dr. Ear
hart did advanced .study in phy
sical medicine at the' Veterans
Administration center. The last
week they: vacationed at Ensen

Mrs. G.- Q. D'Aibini, has re
ceived an award of merit from
the National society, Daughters
of the . American Revolution, in
recognition of her "outstanding
work for the preservation Cjf the
constitutional f orm . of . govern
ment'? in the United States ,
r' For more -than 30 years Mrs.
D'Albihi has conducted 'classes
for foreign born persons seeking
citizenship and during that time
has assisted Over 500 persons to
become' citizens. ,, . . '..; -"
' Mrs." D'Aibini was presented
the award at a meeting of Crater
Lake chapter of DAR held Janu
ary 22 at Girls Community. dub.
She isa,'past regent .of-the chap
ter to .which she, has belonged
many; years,, has been ; active in
the Republican party for an ex
tended period and' a few years
ago' was named Woman , of the
YearHjy Medford Zdnta club for
her work with ' the citizenship
classes. ' . ,

'Patriotism ' in . Our Schools."
Mrs.' O. E. G. Meyers gave a com
prehensive report on the DAR
approved schools, which con
sisted of two for underprivil
eged children . which - are owned
and maintained by the National
society, and 11 others which are
approved. In the past four years
the schools have been given $1,
700,000 by the society.
; Elliott' D. Becken, ' assistant
superintendent of city schools,
gave-.the main address entitled
"Citizen Education -in; Our
Schools."
