When he' was .a very young idoctor, said Dr Edward S. Gif f ord of :: Philadelphia, he sent people who came to him , with eye complaints to an eye spec ialist. In due course the eye dic tor told him the patients needed or did not need glasses, or they had a little chronic conjunctivi tis or whatever,' and he thought that should settle the matter.'' But in many cases, . it didn't The' patients kept right on com plaining of eye fatigue, or head aches after reading, of itching, burning, and too much watering, of fear of light, and light flashes and spots before the eyes. "I did not know then what 1 have many occasions; to realize now," he said. "The eye is the most common site of neurotic symptoms when they tare' "local ized mainly in one part o E the body.", x- The Eyes Hare It .' : ; It should be kept in mind that in speaking of "neurotic symp toms" he referred to emotional processes of which - the individ ual is not conscious. They result from conflicts buried in the un conscious segments of the mind consciously, the individual is convinced firmly that his symp toms ' have purely ; physical Causes. " -:;- :- :;5' - ,;,,. - Dr. Giff ord cited medical sta tistics which indicate that 31 per cent of the patients of general practitioners, have "emotionally induced illness s without struc ture changes" in their bodies. The : proportfon 5 probably4, was even higher among the patients of eye doctors, he said. His con clusion was , that "the emotion ally upset patient has a special tendency to focus attention on his eyes."-"- ,-: i -"The vast majority confine themselves -to those small, -annoying symptoms - which1, con Announcement! The Sex; Factor -: ' He pointed to the important part played by ; vision in emo tion. "It may be that those who would normally, derive much of their sexual satisfaction from visual courses are prone to ocu lar symptoms when' nuerotic," he suggesterd. "In our civiliza tion where lip service is paid to a tradition of puritanism and every effort is made to evade it, mental conflict and guilt are in evitable - for; those who - cannot make the necessary adjustment. "Visual stimulation is the daily occurrence of ordinary liv ing. His advice to other general practitioners, in the official or gan of the American Academy of General Practice, was "to take the neurotic patient seriously It is unfair to accuse him of en joying his suffering. The neurotr ic symptoms represent attempts to escape neurotic anxiety, and the neurotic anxiety is the more painful." ... Geiger Counters Hunt Dirt on Navy Dishes v Bayonne, N.J.
