Sometimes it makes : me cringe when I see ; him picking his teeth in public; spearing a piece of bread from across the table with his fork, or not getting ; Uo ;;when an older . person' speaks to ; him. I hate to go to my friends homes or to parties with him; because I know my friends are going to criticise him. He is a splendid young man in every other way, has a good job and will make a success in life, and has high moral standards. I wonder if I could be happy with him when his bad manners upset me now. What is your opinion?". (A) My opinion is that you would be very, very foolish to consider seriously the possibility .of marry i 3i 2 'this man, now or ever. If you "cringe", now because of his "a t r ocious ma nnet s, t h i n k how mu c h more you- would cringe if ; you Dr. Hurlock were - married to him and had to see his . bad manners dav in and -vday out over the years. " Because manners are learned, it is always possible to relearn them. The man you love could learn : behavior patterns that were more in keeping with, what neoole consider "correct," but would he? : Once a behavior- pattern is learned and has been practiced over the years, it develops into a habit. Then it is so automatic that it can be carried out with out constant thought or atten tion on the person's part. :. This means that, even if this young man seriously; wanted to learn manners worked hard Jto learn them, there would be times when the old bad man ners would creep back and em barrass, or annoy you. You certainly cannot tell this man that he must change his manners. If he has not discover ed yet, - from associating with vou and your friends, .." what good manners are, it means that he is satisfied with the manners he now hasr; Therefore, he "will have little incentive to change, even if he loves you dearly. That's the word to ski novices from one of the nation's best Albert Van de Kogel, World War II" crack ski trooper, and now chief ski consultant for a lead ing New York sports store." ; Van der Kogel ; has come up with some advice on how to get started at the sport, based on his own cheerful record 35 years on the slopes with nary a broken bone to report. Here are the lips: "U "J 1. Equipment is half the bat tle. Key items: boots that fit (control v of your skis depends mainly on the fit of your boots); skis of the right length (one foot over : head height); and safety designed bindings or - clamps, preferably 4he kind with a release-catch because they slide off the skis the- moment you fall, thus preventing leg fractures. ; 2. Skiing is a hot sport. Wear light clothing ? that won't tire you with its weight. ; Into your suitcase should go: long johns, ski pants, ; shirt, "windbreaker, scarf, cap, gloves, and ; petrol eum jelly. Coat your faee with the jelly Jo protect you against sunburn on the slopes a non spectacular, .but nevertheless common, ski hazard. 3. The first tries at the slopes should be slow and easy. Keep to the low hills and fasten onto a learner's group if you can. Don't try to show off skiing is - for recreation, hot compete tion. Be prepared for spills, they are part of the learning process. Quit when the sun quits. Late afternoon skiing is both fatigu ing and dangerous. ; A; Mexican free-tailed bat, banded at Carlsbad Caverns Na tional Park, N.M.V has been re covered in Jalisco State, Mexico, 800 miles south of the caverns.
