Saturday's call comes from station KMED at 11:45 a.m. Members of March of Dimes comittees, their families; mem bers of participating newspapers, radio stations and the television station and their families and members of the family of the Mystery Man are not. allowed to participate, according to the committee. Soviet Summon Envoy Home From France Paris (U.R) The Soviet Union called home its ambassa dor to France for consultations today in an increasingly tough Communist campaign to stop the rearmament of West Germany Russia, fired notes last night to the five present Brussels treaty powers protesting that the contemplated Western European Union violated the Geneva Con vention on the use. of chemical and bacteriological weapons. A brief announcement by the Soviet Embassy said Ambassa dor Serge Vinogradov will leave Paris for Moscow via Berlin this afternoon for consultations. Chase, Manhattan Banks PJan Merger New York (U.R) New York's Chase National Bank and the state chartered Bank of the Manhattan Company plan to merge into what will be the na tion's second largest bank. ' The combined banking firm, with assets of over $7,576,000, 000 will be second only the $8, 000,000,000 Bank of America in California. The announcement yesterday said the merger all ready has been approved by di rectors of both firms. The new bank will be known as the Chase Manhattan Bank. Form loon Association Sets Annual Meeting The Southern Oregon Nation al Farm Loan association, local representative of the Federal Land Bank for Jackson and Jo sephine counties, will hold its annual meeting and election of officers Wednesday, Jan. 19. The meeting will be at the Gold Hill Grange hall. Registration will begin at-11 a.m. and dinner will be served by the Gold Hill Grange ladies at noon. ; F, E. Carl Francis " of Dayton today had three bills working in the Legis lature to make it tougher' on dads who left the kids with mom too long. One of his proposals calls for making it a felony instead of a misdemeanor for contributing to the dependency of a child. This would make violators liable to a prison term as well as a fine. A second bill would require the attorney general to institute criminal proceedings in aban donment cases and the third would allow persons convicted of such an offense to work on the state prison farm. Tachen Quiet After Five Days of Bombing Taipeih, Formosa (U.R) Tachen Island, a Nationalist out post 200 miles north of Formosa, was reported quiet today after five days of heavy aerial activity but a Nationalist spokesman re peated warnings that the- Com munists were capable of assault ing it at any time. Col. Lu Ta, Nationalist mili tary spokesman, said, the Reds had. massed aircraft, ships and troops for an invasion and that he believed they" were preparing to hit Tachen or. other of the Nationalist-held islands off the mainland.
