Q o c o a rrrctctr uriad Siieure Investment of $25 in 1840 British Stamp "Yes," said Mr. Murgatroyd reflectively, "that's the oldest British stamp, an 1840 issue. It was the 13th stamp in the 14th horizontal row of the sheet, but it isn't among the most valuable of my collection." , ; . Mr. Murgatroyd picked up the stamp in his fingers. : "I treasure it because my fa ther gave it to me when I start ed my collection this and some others that I've traded off." .The stamp was a black , on white, one penny item, with a bust of the young Queen Vic- , toria facing left. In the two 1 lower corners were the letters N and M. ' " 'Those letters are how you tell where the stamps came from in the sheet," resumed Mr. Mur- ; gatroyd. "In case you don't know, N is the 14th and M the 13h letter in the alphabet. So this stamp was 13th in the 14th row." ; "But I've made a pot of money GREENERY CAMOUFLAGE Someone emerged from a car but I couldn't tell who because of a heavy screen of foliage she carried before her in a vase. "It's only me," replied my niece Judith. "I'll handle the vase," she said, in a tone suggesting it was too precious to take a chance with. I began to see why she felt that way a few minutes later when she stood it up in the kitchen sink. Grimy as it was from sitting around in a green house for several years, as she told me it had a beautiful classic shape. There were double handles at the shoulder where the piece was about seven inches wide, and it curved inward in a graceful taper to where it sud denly flared out into a base some four inches in diameter. Its overall height was just under 16 inches. . At first, its color was decided ly disappointing a rather non MINER COMES UP WITH Tony is a prospector, 1954 model, but his roots are deep in 1849 in more ways than one. When he started back last summer from an 18-month gold hunt in Mexico's' State of Sonera he had to wire for money to get home." ' But when he started to return to Mexico last week this time primarily for uranium he was equipped with scintillometer, jeep and all the other necessary pa'raphenalia, completely debt free. . . :, . The reason why is that when he went in last time he sold his car in a small Sonora town for 500 paper pesos and a $10 gold piece. : '": : .. : "The car " was worth a lot . more down there," he said, "but I knew I wouldn't come out the same way I went in, so I sold it, even though it was slightly Illegal to do so. And I also knew the gold piece was worth more than the difference that I might have got if I had come back the same way." : ' The coin he brought out was "one made by the Cincinnati Min ing and Trading Company, of San Francisco, back in 1849. 18 MEDFORD REALTY BOARD FOR RENT TWO BEDROOM HOME FULLY FURNISHED. "Years ago, I bought over 1,000 used copies of it. Cost me nearly $25 and I forgot about 'em for a long time till around 1825 when my grandchildren were coming pretty far along." I interrupted to ask how he could manage to get so many of them, and he explained that it was no trick at all back in the 'Eighties. "Most people," he said "couldn't see that things as com' mon as postage stamps would ever be worth any real, money, but I felt sure that they would. Mr. Murgatroyd went on. "Well, anyway, a lot of "Uose stamps I got were still on old letters, ' and when I started to sell 'em off I really cashed in. I asked him what he got as an average price. - "I can tell you to the penny,' he replied. "That stamp, used, catalogues at $9 today. Well, I got an average price because of the covers of $4.57. FOR PURCHASE OF VASE descript grey and a dirty green. ButV gradually, under the in fluence of warm water and plenty of good soap, not a de tergent, it began to glisten and even gleam in a combination of cameo white and a rich olive green. .:- : '.: :- ? :-- -:; "I paid $10 for all the greenery with the vase," said my niece when I asked her what she wanted done with the leafy stuff. "And all I got it for was the vase, but I suppose we might as well see what we can do with the balance." "Here's the key to the situa tion," said ; my niece, turning . the, vase carefully and ' tracing out the mark of Thomas Webb & Son on the vase. K "It's a top " piece of cameo glass, made at the Webb plant in Stourbridge, she said, "and I'll bet anything in reason that a fair price for it would be $400." I didn't take the bet. I thought she might be right, and she was. RARE $10 GOLD PIECE Tony showed it to me before he sold it, and it was in excel lent condition. Even the U. S. shield, clutched in the talons of a flying eagle just above the date, was virtually unscratched. The reeded edge was clean.' I asked him if he knew what he should get for it. "I know : it catalogues for $5,000," he .said, "but I also know where there's some urani um. Tons of it like this here," and he whipped out some sam ples of yellow crumbly: ore, "and I want to get back to it before someone ; else beats me to it. So, naturally, I'll sell it fairly cheap." . What he actually got for it vas $3,200, he told me, and he .would have taken as low as $2,500 if he had to. : . Even that amount would have done the trick," he said, f'and besides, I'm pretty sure I might get another California coin down there. You see, lots of California . miners went down there when the pickin's in California were gone and a lot . of them took some gold with them." : (Released by McClurt Newspaper Syndicate) 18 MEDFORD REALTY BOARD CO-jrn TOTAL Small hotel, JJLJV furnished. Lincoln had written the message . that began: "Fourscore and seven years ago " Sensing the impermanence of spoken words, Lincoln himself de clared: , , 1 I'The world w'JI little note nor long remember what we say here . ; ." But his words were caught and preserved for all time by the newspaper presses of the nation. ; Nor did it matter that the singing words of Homer, his v Iliad and Odyssey, were 'spoken from memory, for there were scribes who wrote them down and kept ; them fresh and living for all mankind. :'. Yes, the written message, and chiefly the printed message, is the one that lives. But moire than that, the written mes sage is tangible as well as permanent. You can return again and again to it, clip it out, pass it on to others.' Without wishing to profane Lincoln's glorious words, or the ancient classics, The Mail Tribune asks you to consider the proposition that the written message is the one that lives in terms of advertising. - - - The printed page rich in detail, exact, in its message, : ? can be studied byjhe reader . . . not fifteen seconds, . not a minute-but for an hour if the reader so wishes , . . referred o the following day .. week . . month. But, more importantly, from the psychological point of view, the printed advertisement is a message read willingly. When Mrs. Smith sits down with her Mail Tribune she is asking to be sold; she wants to know about the new cake . mix. And Mr. Brown wants to study the features of the new cars. The MAIL TRIBUNE wishes to remind merchants and s " businessmen of the-basic wisdom of building your. , advertising promotion around VISUAL PRINTED media. ' ' -' In other words. If you want your advertising message - , to WORK and to LAST, put it in PRINT-FIRSTI t ' , Adaption courtesy NEWS WEEK Maraitae MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN 21-FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS MADE to measure suits.
