The Beaven trailed the visit ing Cougars until Halbrook's en try midway through the first period. The all - coast center quickly sank a field goal to put Oregon State ahead 24-23. The Beavers increased their lead, and were ahead 29-24 as the half ended. The second half was much faster than - the first as the 'coaches of both teams used two platoons. By UNITED PRESS The Pacific Coast Conference basketball season got off with a bang last night with division winners from both the North and the South grabbing wins, but they can look for competi tion before the season is over, Southern California's defend ing champions downed the rug ged California Golden Bears, 63 to 56, but the victory came at the free throw line. The Bears outscored the Trojan? from the floor, 24-19, as California's all American center Bob McKeen hit for 30 points. The Trojans maintained ball control most, of the game and were able to score from the free throw line as they were given 39 free throws of which they made 25 good. At the same time, the Washing ton Huskies and Stanford In dians were serving notice that they will be contenders when the chips are down. The Huskies - used ; height speed and good shooting to bat ter the University of Idaho Van. das, 8153. in a game that Washington controlled from the beginning, Dean Parsons,, Washington's 6-foot, 8-inch center, poured in 32 points and cleared off 19 of Washington's 51 rebounds. Guard Bill Bauscher led Idaho scorers with 15 points. Indians Down Bruins ; , Stanford's Indians, meanwhile defeated the pre-season favor ites from UCLA. 61-56, and broke an eight game drought against the Bruins that extended back to 1952. x Stanford's Ron Tomsic tallied 21 points to keep his 21-points- per-game average, while Willie Naulls led UCLA's scoring with 13 points. The Bulldogs were ahead 30 to 16 at the end of the third canto. Tom Hamlin of, Medford was main scorer with 16 markers, followed by his teammate Ted Brauner - with . nine. Gene Parent's free shot with three seconds to play pro vided the margin. The Grizzlies were never be hind in the tense tangle but they were tied , three times 23-all at half time and 46-all and 48-all in the closing moments. Ashland's widest margin was six points. First quarter tally was 11 to. 9 and after three chukkers it was i l XO 34. D'OUvo Knots Tussle A field shot by Dave D'Olivo knotted . the fray at 46 each. The fouled team was awarded the ball out of .bounds after each foul. The banning of- players after - five personal fouls also was elimin ated with: two points to have been awarded after a player had five fouls. St. Mary's turned bick Butte ; Falls at Medford 46 to 37 and Rogue ' River whipped Prospect 57 to '41 at Prospect First quarter coujnt at Jack sonville favored the Bulldogs by a scant 14. to 12 as the home club Redskins worked the ball well. But the Jacksonville pace fell off in the second quarter and Talent had a 33 to 18 first half lead. The count was stretched to 59 to 29 in the third quarter.
