Dr. A. .Erin Merkel, Jackson county1 health officer, stressed Wednesday in a talk to Medford Kiwanians at Rogue Valley Country club. ; - i- Dr. Merkel stated that the TB death rate, reduced from 200 out of 100,000 persons at the turn of the century to below 20 out of 100,000 by 1950, can't now be used as a criterion. He mentioned ; an increase in the number - of new ' cases in the county and brought out that drugs used are of a nature that arrest the disease, but - do not cure it. Dr. , Merkel listed routine check-ups by physicians, tuber culin skin tests and x-rays as means of discovering tubercu losis. He told of the x-ray equip ment installed , at - Community hospital by the Jackson County Public Health association and available to the public at nomi nal charge, on Wednesday after noons. ' There is good reason to have the equipment at a hospital rath er than at some location down town which is possibly more ac cessible, the doctor explained, Tuberculosis rate among, hospi tal admissions has been found to be six times as high as among the public! in general, Dr.. Congress and therefore do not pay income taxes to the U.S. Year-End Total Of Unemployment Below Last Year Salem (UJJ Unemployment in Oregon increased 12,500 dur ing December, but the year-end total of 53,200 remained well be low last year, according to the State Unemployment Compen sation Commission.: '.. The new figure, made from estimates by the commission's 26 local offices, compared with 63,400 a year ago and 54,227 on Jan. 1, 1953. ...
