Mrs. Jeffery pointed out, those
who offer the cards have a sen-

cards, and are only "too happy"
to learn of a practical use for
them. '

Dr. A. .Erin Merkel, Jackson
county1 health officer, stressed
Wednesday in a talk to Medford
Kiwanians at Rogue Valley
Country club. ; - i-
Dr. Merkel stated that the TB
death rate, reduced from 200
out of 100,000 persons at the
turn of the century to below 20
out of 100,000 by 1950, can't
now be used as a criterion.
Just Don't Die
People become infected now
but just don't die, he pointed
out. That increases the detection
and prevention problem, accord
ing to the health officer. He
mentioned ; an increase in the
number - of new ' cases in the
county and brought out that
drugs used are of a nature that
arrest the disease, but - do not
cure it. When the drugs are tak
en away, the "bugs", start up
again, the doctor reported.
Dr. , Merkel listed routine
check-ups by physicians, tuber
culin skin tests and x-rays as
means of discovering tubercu
losis. He told of the x-ray equip
ment installed , at - Community
hospital by the Jackson County
Public Health association and
available to the public at nomi
nal charge, on Wednesday after
noons. J . -
Better at Hospital . '
There is good reason to have
the equipment at a hospital rath
er than at some location down
town which is possibly more ac
cessible, the doctor explained,
Tuberculosis rate among, hospi
tal admissions has been found
to be six times as high as among
the public! in general, Dr.. Mer
kel reported.
John Dellenback conducted
the luncheon meeting, his first
as new president of the club. He
succeeds Boyd ; Budge. Formal
installation of new officers will
be next Wednesday noon at the
country club. Wilbur P. Riddles-
barger, lieutenant governor for
District 15 of the Kiwanis Pa
cific Northwest district, will be
installing officer. :
