The pow er is derived as part of its mone tary program, he said. Had $5,000 in Gold The two men were arrested several weeks ago in a Port land hotel in possession of a suitcase containing $5,000 worth of gold bricks. Defense lawyers argued that the act was unconstitutional and was passed as a war emergency and that it ceased to be effective after the war ended." The fed' eral attorney asserted, however, that congress had recognized the effectiveness of the law and had adopted an amendment in 1941 Judge McColloch concluded his brief opinion that the ques tion involved was a "political" one and not constitutional. Her suit was filed last Nov. 22 because of something "so intimate in nature" she didn't want to tell about it. , Smacks of Blackmail Astor's suit described the al legations against him as "scurri lous charges and innuendoes, smacking of a form of blackmail that is becoming all to prevalent in this country. He said the charges were "not only false but diabolically made in the furtherance of a vicious entrapment scheme concocted before marriage for the purpose of mulcting him of his money." Air Force Men Base Get High BY HENRY RIEGER United Press Correspondent Thule.AFB, Greenland (U.R) Some 4000 men at this bleak northermost U.S. Air Force out post brought in 1955 with a floor show New Yorkers couldn't match at $50 a head. For the -second consecutive year, Air r orce Secretary Har old . Talbot made 1 sure that "his finest" the men who safe guard the backdoor to the Uni ted States thousands of miles from their homes and loved ones were not forgotten. Big Military Air Transport Service planes flew into this air base on an ice tap an array of stars that would bankrupt the Copacabana in salaries. Head ing the list was one man who was right at home in this snow swept postole ski-nose himself, Bob Hope With him were Mar garet Whiting, Bill Holden and his wife, Brenda Marshall and brushlip Jerry Colonna. A bevy of beauties, sparked by voluptu ous Anita Eckberg, bulged the eyeballs of these femme starved airmen. A Warm Day So grateful were the men of Thule, they stood in a mile-long line in temperatures ranging to 27 below zero It was unseason ably warm here Saturday for an hour or more at both the matinee" and the evening shows. Their reception was so spontaneous, so genuine, it even stirred this old hardbitten news man the only working news man to make the trip with the troupe. Secretary Talbot, the Air Water Spills Over am; State Officials Alarmed Bend (U.R) Water spilled over Wickiup dam and ran through the woods east of Wick iup Butte Friday afternoon, alarming state game officials and threatening to cut off sev eral .secondary roads. Spillway Closed The main spillway : has been closed and an emergency waste- way was in use while repair work was completed on the spill basin. But unexpected rain and snow melt filled the 187,- 000-acre-foot reservoir- to capa city and a trickle started spill ing out. ' Monte L. Montgomery, State Fish Commission official, said he feared the stream soon would develop into a full 500-cubic- foot-per-second flow, carve out a new channel, cut through three roads and pour silt into trout spawning areas of the Deschutes below the dam. Damage 'Doubted -' A. E. Perry, watermaster for the Bureau of Reclamation, said he doubted the overflow would do much damage, due to the porous nature of the soil and the protection of grass and timber. Repair work on the basin is expected to be completed by Jan. 15, permitting use of reg ular overflow channels. Wickiup D ' in Northern Class Show Force chief of personnel,' Lt. Gen. Emmett Rosy O'Donnell and other high echelon person nel also were on hand. All Day Darkness Base Commander Coo. : Wil liam Kimball of Washington, D. C, and his staff worked to ar range schedules at this around1 the-clock lookout base at the top of the world, and as Hope put it, "a few block from down town Siberia," so that all the men could attend the "matinee" performance held in the black of afternoon It is the winter season and remains dark for more than four months or the evening show timed to end at the stroke of the new year. But there were a' few, Lt. Harvey Kelly of San Angelo, Texas, and men like Lt. Joseph Hancock of Lakewood, Calif., and his pilots of "E" Flight who were on one hour alert. Sure, there was a tinge of regret but they were glad their buddies were not denied a New Year's Eve celebration. WYI Everybody!
