A father writes: (Q) "My wife and I argue all ihe time about our four . teenage children. The oldest ; girls, 14 and 18 years old, ! haye caused most of Ihe ' trouble. The 18-year-old girl runs the streets all the lime and sometimes stays away from - home for two or three days. I had to go to the police about her sereral times. I hare a good job but my wife ', wants to work. Three or four I nights a week, she bowls or goes to the beer garden in- stead of looking after the chil- dren. My wife let the 14-year ; eld girl quit high school. She doesn't seem to care about the i children. I hare argued with her. but it doesn't seem to do .any good. We make enough money to girt the children a ! good education, but she doesn't seem to care if they are edu . cated or not. What shall I do?" When Topsy was a colt a few physicians who dared to think for themselves voiced the opin ion that so-called "growing pains" were perhaps premoni tory of rheumatic fever. This was a "radical" idea and the medical profession continued to brush off "growing pains" as something for which there was no treatment, although recog nized medical authorities at the dawn of this century maintain ed that "there is no doubt that 'growing pains' occur 'in healthy children, quite independently of rheumatism; . but any com plaint of growing pains should lead to careful investigation of the patient's history, and of the condition of his heart.. A" family history or past personal history of rheumatism or chorea" (St. Vitus' dance) will often be made out; and. not rarely examination of the heart will lead to the dis covery of valvular disease." Frankly, this statement, quot ed from French's Index of Dif ferential Diagnosis, 3rd ed., 1917 seems an attempt to make a fed eral case of it. In fact I'd say the theory that "growing pains" are related to rheumatic fever is nearly as far-fetched as the no tion that such aches or pains are due to growing. Much more plausible, in my judgment and you folks know me well enough is the theory that "growing pains" are a mani festation of calcium and D defi ciency. The complaint is tetany, and the treatment is an optimal daily intake of calcium and vita min D. Not medicine but food or, if the regular diet does not provide an adequate amount of Ca and D, a supplement con taining the essential - elements Labor Council Plans Unemployment Survey Portland (U.R) Complain ing that year-end stories of pros perity and employment were rosy, the Portland Labor coun cil decided last night to conduct a survey of unemployment.
