A young girl writes: -(Q) "I have the poblerm of stuttering and stammering, and it is driving mo crazy. Could you give me some ad vice about what to do io cor rect ' my speech? I'd like to start a singing career, as I can sing without stammering. But when I'm nervous or ex cited, I'm lost." (A) If you can sing without stuttering, that should give you the confidence you need to real ize that you can lick this prob- a lem. However, do not jump to the conclusion that just be cause you can sing without stuttering you can have a s u c c es sful career- as a singer. In the first place, a sing ing career requires a good voice to begin with and years of train ing to cultivate it- Also, a singer must have emotional control to . be able to sing her best in spite of an audience. You say that when you get nervous or excited, you are lost" This would suggest to me that you might find your stutter ing creeping into your singing SB- , fr Drl Hur lock POISON OAK? Try a Bottle of ZEMAC0L You must be satisfied or your money cheerfully refunded. Get a bottle to day at WESTERN THRIFT, , if you sang-before an audience. You singing teacher should be able - to recommend a good speech teacher who can help you to control your voice when you are talking. You have acquired from your singing one of the foundations of speech correc tion, "the ability to control your breathing. That is not enough, however. You must also learn to control your emotions, especially when you are with people, so you will not get excited and nervous. Your teacher can help you in this only within limits. The rest you will have to do for yourself. Until this problem has been met successfully, do not plan on a singing career, no matter how good your voice is. Good sing ing can be ruined by stuttering just as everyday speech can. (COPYRIGHT 1954. GENERAL FEATURES CORP.) Portland U.R) Dr. William A. NEW HUDSON DEALER FRONT & JACKSON Phone 2-6281 In my early 'teens I -suffered with oily skin, blackheads and pimples (doctors call it acne) and so I have a lot of sympathy for youngsters with this trou ble, for boys and even more for girls, be cause a girl's vanity is ten der and. more easily hurt. I urge every Dr. Brady ' reader who has this common skin rash erup tion, blemish or whatever you please to call it, or who has "a boy or girl so troubled, to send me a stamped, self-addressed en velope and i ask in writing (you see, knucklehead, if you use a clipping of this item instead of asking in writing and signing your request,, it is likely to be come separated from the enve lope and we cannot stop to guess who writes what) for the pam phlet Acne. ml 'Spec Keene Suffers Slight Heart Attack Corvallis (U.R) Roy S. "Spec" Keene, 60 athletic direc tor at Oregon State college, was hospitalized for treatment of a slight heart attack, his physician has announced. Attendants at the hospital said Keene was resting well but will not be able to receive visitors visitors until further notice. If you use the camphor-sul-furglycerin-witch hazel lotion every night, following hot soap and water scrubbing, it will probably set up some, irritation after four or five days. That is not bad; in fact it is desirable. Just give the treatment a rest for two or three days, or until the irritation subsides, then re sume applications every night or each alternate night or twice in the week. ' For goodness sake don't take my pamphlet or any part of it to the drugstore and ask the man to put up thjs or that "prescrip tion" for you. The formulas or recipes I give are not prescrip tions. They are merely directions to guide you in making up . the mixtures yourself. You can read, can't you? If you don't want an im pudent clerk to ask embar rassing questions or try to sell you the nostrum that pays the largest profit, you may purchase the sublimed sulfur at one store, the camphor water at another, the glycerin at a third and the witch hazel "extract" at the 5&10 maybe. Por the benefit of, .Ignorant and vicious persons who know so much that isn't so, I repeat here what I say in the pamphlet: Nearly all normal young per sons have more or. less acne perhaps it is a blessing in that it tempers what might other wise become insufferable vanity in youth. Pimples are in no way re la ted to "impure blood" (what ever that may be) and have no bearing whatever on the moral ity of the individual. Young persons with oily skin, blackheads and a tendency to acne should avoid all salves or creams and rely on plain soap and waterskin care. Plain soap, I say, not medicated, "beauty" or "penetrating" nostrums. - For excessive oiliness of the skin, without pimples, soap on the skin once daily a solution of ten (10) grains of resorcin in the ounce of bay rum, witch hazel or toilet water of any kind.
