Another, con tract for similar work will be let soon. Initial work is planned to "tie the river down," and the actual switch of the channel is not ex pected to come until later stages of the project. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, December 21, 1954 IPDamis ffoir MJuisia A new hospital being consid ered here to serve a southern Oregon and northern California population area, of which Med ford is the center, "is not just something to dream about," Glenn Jackson told a roundtable meeting , of Jackson County Chamber of Commerce members Monday at the Jackson hotel. The chamber of commerce and Medford Hospital association have been studying the possibil ity of expanding hospital facil ities here to better meet the needs of the area. Jackson has participated in much of the pre liminary work. About Half Committed About half of the money which would have to be raised locally for construction of a hospital has been-committed with no strings attached, Jackson report ed. It is figured that $1,275,000 altogether would have to be raised here. A Stanford Research Institute study made at the request of the chamber has estimated conserv atively that cost of an adequate facility would be about $1,770, 000, It brought out that one-third of the construction cost, about $495,000 in assistance, reason ably can be expected from, the federal government through the Hill-Burton act. Application Made Jackson said that the associa tion has made preliminary ap plication to the Hill-Burton peo ple for funds.ft Mentioning that it was felt that construction of a new hos pital would be better than ex panding the present Community hospital, Jackson stated that re searchers came up with a "feas ible project." Once such a facil ity is built, the present hospital will be abandoned, he said. , The research - project, the speaker reported, brought out the growing importance of this area "from the viewpoint of dis tributors." Mills Here 'Saved' In other discussion A. A. Laus-mann,-. general manager of Kogap Lumber industries, point ed out that lumber industry strikes to the north actually saved some mills in this area "from the scrap heap." Mills, he said, put on more shifts and ran m6re hours; Lausmann reported that Southern Pacific company had reported that shipments of lumber from Jackson and Jose phine counties for one month were 50 per cent above the year before. - .
