Th e rivalry between Mac Eae's N B C "Colgate Com edy Hour" and Sullivan's CBS "Tnnet n( ihp Aline Mosby Town" is giv ing ulcers to executives at both networks. Network big-wigs usually fret over how their programs do in comparison to their network ri vals. NBC, for example, fights the CBS family comedy "I Love Lucy", with a completely differ ent type of program, "Medic." Similar Shows But to battle CBS' award "winning "Toast of the Town," NBC has thrown in a similar program, "The Comedy Hour." This causes some viewers to wish for two TV sets to save flipping the .dial between the two programs. Last year "Comedy Hour" was headed by different comedians each week.-But this year the network changed the format to a vaudeville-type show copy ing "Toast of the Town." "Yes, the format of the two shows is similar now,'.' admitted MacHae today. Gordon Performs " . "But there's one difference between Sullivan and me I have to perform. I do a lot more on my show. All he has to do is announce the numbers." MacRae was peacefully work ing on location for "Oklahoma" in Nogales, Ariz., when his agents rushed out with the offer for "Comedy Hour." "I really didn't want to be on television," he said. After all, competition is part of the American way of life." As both shows are vaudeville, their success largely depends upon the acts they get. The two programs fight to uncover new talent, develop - new ideas and books top entertainers. ... "Comedy Hour'' came up this fall with the inspiration of cash ing in on current events. After Marlon Brando's great love was revealed, the producers hurried ly signed up his girl friend, Josianne Berenger, for an ap pearance on the "Comedy Hour." She did little more than say hello, but the rating leaped. On MacRae's latest show he brought forth a triple-t h r e a t bobby-soxers' combination, Tony Curtis, Jeff Chandler and Rock Hudson.
