I1 1 t... i TEX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, Demb 17, 1954 agile Peimt Foe off Torinado Tonight; North- Send - Here, on Saturday ' Evening i j Prep basketball returni to the Medford senior high maplecourt fonight after a couple of weeks absence and the Black Tornado has the first of live straight De cember warm-up games at home as it grooms for its Southern Oregon Conference and District - S openers in January. ; Its the Black tornado against the Eagle Point Eagles tonight. Pn Saturday Medford is a host again to the North Bend Bull dogs. And word from the Tor iado is that, while neither con flict has conference or district 'significance, the two frays are not being takqn lightly. ' Both games will shed light on .Medford's chances with the de fending champion of its loop, the Grants Pass Cavemen. For, while the Tornado is playing Eagle Point tonight, the Cave men will entertain North Bend. And Grants Pass will go to Eagle Point on Saturday. A lot can happen between now and March, but tonight's tussle between the Eagles and Tornado could well be a pre view of the District 4 play-offs at the end of the season. Eagle Point a club which has been abuilding for a couple of years, has been tabbed the team to beat among the Little Six schools in this sector. Medford has been rated in a like cate gory in the Big Four section of the district. Medford will carry a height advantage into the mix with the Eagles but Eagle Point has some height, too, and an observer has indicated that the 1954-1955 ver sion of the Eagles can run hard and shoot well. Against North Bend the Tor nado will encounter a club rated the favorite in its own area. The Bulldogs have been picked by coast prognosticators as fairly certain to make the state tourney journey this sea son. Medford will have the edge in one department, height. Torna do ability to use that asset will count a lot. It may . find the Bulldogs tenacious under the backboards. Word from Grants Pass is that North Bend may show a football-type of rugged ness. Willard Reeve, 205 pounds and 6 feet Vz inch, with 304 re bounds for North Bend last year, is evidence of that quality. Veterans On Hand The Bulldogs, like the Eagles, have a good handful of veterans on hand plus 6-3 Vz Dave Hart ley, two-year veteran at Nyssa before transferring to North Bend. Coach Frank Roelandt likely will call on his regular starting five to open both week end frays for Medford. That would put Bud Kastner and Glenn Peter son at forwards, Jerry Kalapus at center and Larry Copple and Frank Rector 'at guards. They in clude Bill Cochran, Dick Mc Laughlin, Ed McCullough, Lloyd Assembly Honors Chief Gridders Rogue River Jack Herburger and Gary Johnson received most valuable player honors this week as 21 football players and a manager were presented . let ters at an award assembly. Herburger was also honored as captain and Ted Stanfield as honorary captain. Nine of the lettermen were recognized for selection to the Jackson County B League all star squad. They were Cletus Daily, Truman Drew, Delbert McKenzie, Bill Weaver and Her burger, named to the team, and Johnson, Lloyd Morrow, Roland Prefountaine and Stanfield. A fourth letter went to Charles Gnose. Third mono grams were won by Daily, Ron Doolittle, Bob Hoover, McKen zie, Prefountaine and Stanfield. Second letters were earned by Ron Doolittle, Drew, Herburger, Walter Johansen, Johnson, Mor row, Gary Phillips and Weaver. First year lettermen are Fred Bond, Bill Headrick, Don Mar tin, Gary Stinchcomb, Scott Thorell and Bob Wilson. James Johnson got the man agerial monogram. Cearley, John Foust and Bob Tisdel. Roelandt reported last night that the Black . Tornado appar ently will be in top shape physi cally for the week end. A likely line-up for Eagle Point is Harvey Nelson and Carl Christian at forwards, Bill Caldwell as center and Ken Bit terling and Jack Greb at guards. Caldwell hurt bis knee in a game with Rogue River on Tues day and there was some ques tion as to his availability. The report was circulating here that he would be in the line-up. Medford hopes so. Games this week end are expected to deter mine pretty well the real caliber of the Tornado and Medford would like to face both North Bend and Eagle Point at their strongest possible. Ed Abernathy or Jerry Cave would be in the center spot in place of Caldwell. Jerry Tuttle is giving Greb and Bitterling a battle at guard, according to Coach Jerry Mosby. A possible line-up for North Bend . isn't known for sure but is likely to include Hoddy Schepman, Dick Woolstenhulme, Hartley and Reeve. Reeve scor ed 304 point for NB last year, Schepman got 27 and Woolsten hulme 149. Coach Ray O'Dell may pick from among xAl Van Leuven, LeRoy King and Jack Shanley for the fifth starter. Medford rounds out its pre conference slate . against Rose burg here December : 2 , and Cleveland of Portland here on December 28 and 29. Turkey Shoot On Sunday . The fall and winter series of turkey shoots at Medford . Gun club wind up this Sunday with the fourth shoot of the season, Activity will start as usual at 10 a.m. There will be events for various classes of shooters in skeet and 16-yard competi tion. Events are planned for non- shooters. It is hoped to wind up the series with the largest turn' out of the four occasions. Club officials said that there will be plenty of prizes. French Boxer's U.S. Manager Given Suspension San Francisco (U.R) George Kanter, American representa tive for French boxer Pierre Langlois, today began a two weeks suspension by the Cali fornia Athletic Commission for "mouthings" to the press after his fighter's loss Wednesday night.
