SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, December 14, 1354 Australian Uiii Attempt World-Circ Jii Dnlg Trip AiYpnoidus' m Early Next Year London (U.R) Benjamin Frederick Carlin, who crossed the Atlantic in an amphibious jeep three months ago, is starting on his travels again and this time expects to get clear around the world. The 42-year-old Australian and his Boston born wife Eleanor plan to leave England for Aus tralia early next year in their jeep "Half Safe." From Australia they will gd to San Francisco and thence to Montreal, where Carlin started driving toward Europe six and a half years ago. Carlin, a mining engineer from Perth who served in the Indian army during World War II, boasted once to a friend that a man could drive an amphibious jeep around the world under its own steam, crossing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the process. First Start Flops His friend laughed. So Carlin bought a surplus U.S. Army "duck" and set out in June, 1948, from New York bound for the Azores. A broken bearing halted him 270 miles out and he was ignominously towed off to Montreal by a tanker. Carlin refused to give up. In July, 1950, he sailed the 19 foot "duck" of out Halifax and to the world's amazement landed in March, 1951, at Cape July in Spanish Rio De Oro on the west coast of Africa. From there he drove to Lon don via Casablanca, Tangier, Gibraltar, Spain, Portugal, Den mark, Sweden, Holland and France. He has been here ever since. Will Write Book Carlin said he has spent the last two and a half years re building the "duck." He will spend the next month complet ing negotiations for publication of a book describing his Atlantic crossing and stocking up' for the next stage of his trip. Neuberger warned the annual convention of Oregon's rural electric coopera tives yesterday against giving approval to any proposal to di vide up Columbia river power by states. Secretory General Fidel Ve lazquez of the Confederation of Workers of Mexico (CTM) said yesterday the union leaders would talk about ways to hold down the use of illegal Mexi can labor in the United States. The meeting was scheduled for Jan. 12 at Monterrey. Knowles Returned To Sacramento ' The Dalles -U.R) Robert C. Knowles, 47, who watched while state police dug up the body of his alleged murder victim . near Shariiko, Ore., Sunday, was in Sacramento today for sentenc ing on federal auto theft charges. Knowles, Bangor, Me., con fessed to the slaying of Albert; C. Stuart, Wickenberg, Ariz., while being held in Sacramento for stealing Stuart's car. He was brought to Oregon under a fed eral order, and will be sentenced in Federal court for auto theft. He pleaded guilty to the theft charge. Dr. Homer Harris of the state police crime laboratory said the body found was badly decom posed and that identification would take several days. The teeth are to be checked against Stuart's "dental chart. - Knowles was to be brought back to Oregon to face a murder charge after his sentence.
