Program Brings Fuller U.S.-Canada Understanding Rochester, N. Y. (U.R) -A unique college program, aimed at bringing the peoples of the United States and Canada closer together, is gaining prominence as an agent for fuller under standing between the two coun tries. Operating under the theory that these international neigh bors are "partners in one anoth er's d e s t i n y," the Canadian Studies Program at the Univer sity of Rochester is striving to improve a peaceful relationship that already is the envy of other nations. - Dr. Cornelis W, de Kiewiet, president of the university, who conceived me program, says ix is our belief that the time has come ' when American public opinion should achieve a greater awareness of today's Canada." A Year Old Through the program, the uni versity is endeavoring to ac quaint college students with the thoughts, feelings and problems of the Canadian people. The project is the only one of ' its kind on an undergraduate level in American universities and is expected to set a pattern for other United States and Cana dian institutions. ' , Initiated only-a year ago, the program now has a comprehen sive collection of Canadian ma terials, and a schedule of courses, research, conferences, teacher exchanges and scholarships. Dr. de Kiewiet points out that Americans are prone to take Canada for granted and to treat Canadians as "bush-league Amer icans." To be oblivious of a very real Canadian self -consciousness is a national fault for which we pay a greater price than we recognize, ha warns. " " " "Canada and the United States are ' indissolubly committed to each other," explained Dr. de Kiewiet. "The facts of geogra phy, history, language, econom ics and strategy make us part- ners in one another's destiny." Tuesday, December 14, 1954 ..... Gilbert, director of the pro gram, ' said "the availability of courses on Canada,- as part of a normal concentration program in history, economics, geogra phy, geology, government or lit erature, will . afford opportunity to study a particular field in terms of another society closely related to our own and to com pare and correlate developments in ' that field , in the two coun tries." One of the most important phases of the program is the conference plan, which draws leaders of the countries together for free and frank discussion. The first in a series, held in Sep tember on economic relations, successfully set the stage for future exchange of ideas. Some 80 leaders in business, education and government attended. !
