SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, December 12, 1954 Many Do-lt-Yourself Toys On Market; Expert Advises By CLAIRE COX United Staff Correspondent New York (U.PJ Many of the nation's 46,000,000 children must 'make their toys this year before they can play with them, , according to experts at the Toy Guidance Council. The council's annual selection of the most outstanding toys of the year included a lot of "do-it-yourself" models. The theory behind them is that youngsters get more pleasure from toys they have to put together them selves. Included among the 104 top ranking toys chosen by experts appointed by the council, a toy industry organization, were scale model airplane sets, sports car assembly kits, building bricks, plastic cities and the traditional logs for making cabins. Children Imitate Elders Dr. Emma Dickson Sheeny, professor of child education at Columbia University's Teacher's college, was one of the panel of experts who "psycho-analyzed" hundreds of toys. She said that the "do-it-yourself" trend is following the pat tern set in adult activities. While parents are putting to gether high fidelity radio-phonograph equipment, she said, the children also like to keep con structively occupied. Dr. Sheehy has a few basic rules she follows in the selection of toys, and she suggested par ents might do well to consider them when shopping. They are: 1. Safety Make sure toys are well constructed and have no sharp edges or corners or parts that come off easily and can be swallowed. 2. Age Don't even look at a toy without thinking of the age of the child who is to get it and what the child is interested in. Toys Have Many Uses , 3. "Playabiiity" Select a toy that is versatile, because chil dren use playthings for many purposes. A block may be a bomb one moment or a gun the next. 4. Artistic appeal Is the toy pleasant to look at? Playthings should not have a carnival ap pearance, but should combine colors that give a child an ap preciation 1 of beautiful things. 5. Durability In buying things like took sets, be sure the tools are really good' and usable, and not just shaped like tools. A child needs a sturdy tool more than an. adult does because he is harder on it. "A great deal of attention and corcern is shown for good scale models of real things like cars and trains," Sheehy said. Central Point Lady Lions club members reported following a business meeting Tuesday eve ning at the home of Mrs. Fred Parkinson. - . Those knowing of needy fam ilies in the Central Point area are urged to contact Mrs. Bill Saxbury immediately. A notice will be sent to all families ac cepting toys that they pick up their 'boxes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, at the Legion Memorial hall. If toys cannot be picked up, the Lady Lions will deliver them. Members decided to hold only one monthly business meeting. The other meeting will be a social gathering. The next meet ing will be the annual Christ mas party Tuesday, December 21, at the home of Mrs. Bill Saxbury. Straight Lines Best In New Glassware New York (U.PJ The flat look is taking over in glassware as well as in fashion. ; A survey by one manufactur er shows there are fewer curves in glass products, just as Dior has lessened' them in women's clothing for fall and winter. One glass company checked prefer ences of 1,000 housewives and found that 72 per cent preferred straight-line designs, because they're easier to handle, won't tip over as readily, and make a good appearance. j The women were-- about even ly divided on the choice of plain tumblers (42.5 per cent) or dec orated tumblers (41.8 per cent) for day-to-day use, but 78.9 per cent preferred decorated glass ware for entertaining. Eastin, Medf ord, were honored at a party Wednesday, December 8, which observed their golden wedding anniversary. The Eastins were married December 8, 1904, in Indianapolis, Ind.. and moved to this county in 1947. About 100 friends and relatives attended the event. McLeod Couple Honored On Golden IVedding Day McLeod About 100 friends of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Eastin called on the Eastins at their home, Rogue haven, on the oc casion of the couple's 50th wed ding anniversary, Wednesday, uecember 8. The event was held during the evening hours. They also received many tele grams, gifts and cards. The couple was married De cember 8, 1904 at Indianapolis, Ind. The . meeting will follow a dinner scheduled for 7 o'clock which will honor Mrs. H. B. Murphy, present cap tain of the troop. The dinner, an annual event, will be given by past captains. Also honored will be the membership of the group. Those who have birthdays during the last six months of the year will be remembered. Auxiliary Sponsors Dance at Camp White Ladies' auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of Oregon sponsored a dance for members of Camp White domi ciliary -Monday. Refreshments were served by the auxiliary fol lowing the entertainment. Mrs. Harry Birch, department hospital chairman for the VFW auxiliary, announces the next dance will be held at 8 p.m., Monday, December 20. Legislator Wed ' In California Sherman Oaks, Calif. U.R) Rep. Joseph Holt, R-Calif., and Lee Trbovich of Valier, HI., were married yesterday, in a private family ceremony at Sherman Oaks Methodist chorch. . Holt, re-elected last month to his second term in the House, met Miss Trbovich in Washing ton, D. C, where she recently has made her home. Bill Miller registered the guests in the guest book and Miss Susan Eastin served punch. Jimmie Stewart To Be Best Man For Father Today Indiana, Pa. (U.R) Movie ac tor Jimmie Stewart plays a "supporting" role today at the wedding of his 82-year-old father to a Canadian widow in a home town ceremony before about 40 friends. $ The lanky cinema star plans to be best man for his octogenar ian father, Alexander Stewart, a - widower who owns and op erates the town's hardware store. He will wed Mrs. J. J. Stot hart, of St. James, New Bruns wick, at the home of Mrs. Robert Dingman, a next-door neighbor, and a niece of the bride-to-be. ... The elder Stewart was re ported by his family to be "bursting with excitement" over the impending ceremony. He met Mrs. Stothart during one of her visits here. His famous son Jimmy arrived today after an overnight train ride from New York, accom anied by his wife, former model Gloria McLean. The prospective bridegroom said the wedding would be a "quiet ceremony." There will be a reception for about 40 close friends. ' The Rev. Harry Boyd' of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate at the ceremony.
