f f II if $ it McGowan, Dean ' Of Umpires, Dies Silver Spring, Md. (U.R) Bill McGowan, 58, dean of American League umpires, died at his home today of a heart attack. McGowan, who had umpired In the American League for 30 years, was retired on a lifetime pension only last Monday. He had suffered a heart seiz ure last Saturday, but appar ently was in good condition. His family said he awakened this morning complaining of a chest pain and collapsed in his bed. McGowan, one of the most colorful umpires In the history of baseball, was . forced out of action in Chicago last summer for the season by a severe attack of diabetes. McGowan umpired in eight World Series and four all-star games. Southern Oregon Meet Underway Ashland Two games are scheduled tonight in the South ern Oregon college invitational basketball tournament as high school entries complete the first round. Jacksonville takes on Camas Valley at 7 p.m. and Talent meets Paisley at 8:30 pjn. St. Mary's was to have played Pros pect this afternoon and -Fort Jones, Calif., was to have op posed Butte Falls. Consolation play is set for Fri day afternoon with champion ship semi-finals in the evening. Finals are on Saturday night. .
