McGowan, Dean '
Of Umpires, Dies
Silver Spring, Md. (U.R) Bill
McGowan, 58, dean of American
League umpires, died at his
home today of a heart attack.
McGowan, who had umpired
In the American League for 30
years, was retired on a lifetime
pension only last Monday.
He had suffered a heart seiz
ure last Saturday, but appar
ently was in good condition. His
family said he awakened this
morning complaining of a chest
pain and collapsed in his bed.
McGowan, one of the most
colorful umpires In the history
of baseball, was . forced out of
action in Chicago last summer
for the season by a severe attack
of diabetes.
McGowan umpired in eight
World Series and four all-star
games.
