SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday December 8, 1954 Sheppard Could Have Made Marks On His Own Neck Cleveland (U.R) The prosecu tion implied today that Dr. Sam uel H. Sheppard could have made marks on his neck himself by clasping his hands at the back of the neck and pressing his thumbs into the front. , That possibility was brought out by Prosecutor Thomas J. Parrino in cross-examining a de fense witness in Dr. Sheppard's wife-slaying trial. ; The witness was Dr. Clifford C. Foster, a staff physician at Bay View Hospital, where Dr. Sheppard, an osteopathic neuro surgeon, also practiced. yii in Hospital Dr. Foster told of visiting Dr. Sheppard in his hospital room from 2:10 to 2:50 p.m. last July 4. r: That was the day Dr. Shep pard's wife, Marilyn, 31, was -bludgeoned to death in her bed before dawn. Dr. Sheppard says 5ie heard her scream, ran to her rescue and was knocked out by her assailant. - The state charges Dr. Shep pard killed her after a quarrel :about his affairs with other Iwomen. ; Dr. Foster testified that Dr. tSheppard was "in mental shock -and was restless and crying -when he visited him. He said he :had noted there was a faded -area on the left sideof Dr. Shep- Jpard's neck near the Adam's ap ple, a swelling at tne oase oi tne :6kull and a swelling on the right ;side of the face. rThumb Pressure : Dr. Foster had written on the -hospital report that Dr. Shep- Tpard had a probable fracture of the jaw. But, questioned by Par ;rino, he said X-rays had disclos ed no fracture there. Under Parrino's questioning, ;Dr. Foster said that if a person's .'hands were clasped behind his '.neck for a long period of time, "the neck area could become :f aded and if a thumb were press .ed against an area of skirl for a long time that area would be--come blanched. Five Valley Men Join Army Here Recently ! Five valley men have enlisted :or reenlisted recently in the -Army, according to Sfc. Warren M. Long, commander of the local recruiting station. Enlisting were Cpl. Joel Har old Straus, Talent; Sgt. Phylip Louis Lausten, son of Mrs. Ethel Mae Guyer, route 1, box 602, Central Point; and James Ni chols, Ben Nichols and 'Jimmy Uoyd Taylor, sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Nichols, route 1, box 473, Central Point. Straus enlisted for the Army's 2nd division at Ft. Lewis, Wash.; Lausten reenlisted for a period of six years in the Army signal corps, and the latter three young men enlisted for the Army's ordnance corps. The Nichols are stepbrothers of Tay lor. -They moved to the valley recently from Redding, Calif. LEGION TO MEET ' Central Point Members of the Myers-Holland post of the American Legion will meet at the Central Point Legion Me morial hall Thursday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m. Cleve King, chief petty Officer at the Medford Navy re cruiting station, will show mo tion pictures of the Navy in ac tion against the Japanese during World War II.
