'A Nichol's Worth of . rT Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Press Fetur Wrir "Washington (U.R) Louis Zeni of Eveleth, Minn., doesn't like to consider himself as handi capped.' Louis, now 46, was born by an accident of birth with what is called cerebral palsy. He was here recently as a delegate to the United Cere bral Palsy Association meeting. Louis was a ball of fire. He spoke. He walked, with the help of the cane, and he told about what he has done for other vic tims he knows in Minnesota. Once Helpless For a long time he was help less. Then he got his back up. Louis Zeni was not one to watch the world go by without pushing the world a little. So he went to the medicos. They performed five corrective operations, on the nerves in the arms and legs. His best friend during his "re covery" period was Col. John Hougen, who is retired from the Pentagon staff and is former president of the Crippled Chil dren's Association of Minnesota. Louis went through all sorts of things. Gymnastics,, whilpool sessions, therapy and surgery. And then - this man; ! who couldn't lift a bottle of milk to feed'himself when he was five years oldV decided to do some thing for other kids afflicted with palsy. V - That was in 1941. .Harold E. Stassen was governor 'of Minne sota at the time. The head man was on Lorrfs Zeni's "side.. He gave him his blesing and urged the Junior Chamber : of Com merta to get behind this young man. The chamber did. The program went on from there. It is going on still. During our interview, Zeni hesitated a few times in his speech, but mostly he could be understood without difficulty. Through his efforts Louis has collected uncounted thousands sola and the idea is spreading. "In Duluth," Louis told me, "in six hours on a program we collected $10,500. All of that money goes to help other victims of palsy. In Minneapolis, we picked up $240,000 in 16 hours. We are going places." Louis has the will to get ahead. He is one of the few palsy vic tims to have a college degree. "I got it," he said, "but with out honors. Point is I got it. Others can, if they will concen trate, and cooperate in our train ing." - . Louis is married to a lovely girl, Helen. They have a nice little fellow, David, 6. Conductors' Added Responsibility Told Chicago (U.R) A labor economist for the Order of Rail way Conductors and Brakemen said train conductors have an added responsibility because locomotives are heavier than they used' to be. Eli Oliver, Washington, ap peared "yesterday before a presi dential fact finding board which is hearing a dispute between the nation's railroads and the union. The union has . demanded a graduated rate of pay depending upon the weight of the locomo tive with the present wage serv ing as a minimum. A railroad representative said the demand was a "thinly dis guised" demand for a wage boost and that the carriers could not afford to pay it. KIESLING GETS PACT Pittsburgh (U.R) With a vote of confidence in the form of a new two-year coaching con tract stuffed in his ample pock ets, big Walter Kie'sling primed his Pittsburgh Steelers for their final game against Cleveland Sunday hoping to repeat an earlier 55-27 defeat of the Browns. Big Kies, termed a mir acle man after he took over from Coach Joe Bach, last Aug ust, inked a new two-year con tract with Steeler owner Art Rooney Tuesday at a reported $12,000 per year. Bach resigned as head coach after the Steelers absorbed their third straight of dollars for his cause in.Minne- exhibition defeat. Hyperventilation Could Be Fatal for Jet Pilots San Antonio, Tex. (U.R) Suf fering from dizzy spells due to hyperventilation? Chances are it won't be fatal unless you're a jet pilot. Hyperventilation is a com paratively new medical term. It affects many people. But fortu nately, the medical profession won't have to come up with a new drug to combat it. But in jet pilots, it's differ ent. Fractions of a second oft en means the difference between life and death. And by breath ing too deeply during anxious moments, a pilot can induce a slight dizziness. That's what the School of Avi ation Medicine has discovered, Col. William H. Lawton, sur geon of the Flying Training Air Force, recently asked the school to look into the connection be tween hyperventilation and im paired performance of jet pilots. The school, under direction of Dr. Robert T. Clark Jr., devised a transparent box, about the size of a portable radio, to mea sure the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide with the per formance , of a student pilot in tense situations. Tests also will be made with pilots at Webb and Big Spring Air Bases, both in Texas. Resume Normal Breathing The average person who suf fers from hyperventilation needn't worry much. About all he has to do is to resume nor mal breathing when he finds that anxiety has caused him to breathe unnaturally, inducing dizziness. A person suffering from hy perventilation may have a tin gling ; sensation in the fingers, slightly fogged vision and poor coordination. His breast will probably heave like that of an old-time movie vamp. According to Air Force stud ies, the best and quickest cure is to stop worrying and resume normal breathing. It's that simple. Gail Russell Given Delay in Drunk Case Hollywood (U.R) Film actress Gail Russell has been granted a delay in her .trial on drunk driving charges because she is reported too ill to attend a court hearing.. Municipal Judge Thurlow T. Taft yesterday postponed the trial in nearby Santa Monica until Feb. 21. The actress is con finded to Good Samaritan hos pital with hepatitis, a form of jaundice. Dr. John Howard Payne testi fied Miss Russell entered the hospital during October in a coma and near death. Judge Taft granted the continuance reluct antly, saying the actress "has been stalling for a long time." Miss Russell, former wife of actor Guy Madison, was arrested in Santa Monica Nov. 24, 1953, fined $150 and given two years' probation. She was sentenced at that time after pleading guilty to intoxica tion, the companion charge of drunk driving, both of which were filed against her following her early morning arrest.
