TSJC MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wdrmday December 8. 1954 CIO, AFL Officials Seek Negotiation on Unification of Unions Los Angeles U.PJ CIO and AFL officials sought today to negotiate "as soon as possible" for unification of the two labor organizations. Delegates to the 16th annual national convention of the CIO set the stage for merger discus sions Tuesday when they en dorsed by a standing vote a pro posal directing CIO officials to work toward an early meeting for possible unification. The united resolution was pre sented to the convention by the CIO members of the Joint AFL CIO Unity Committee CIO President Walter Eeuther, Pres ident David J. MacDonald of the United Steelworkers of America and CIO Secretary - Treasurer James B. Carey. It stated: - "We direct the CIO members of the Unity Committee to con tinue the unity negotiations in the constructive spirit that has already been displayed." r Hopes To Meet Soon Reuther said he hoped - to schedule a meeting of the CIO AFL Unity' Committee sometime after Christmas and before the first of the year. . George Meany, ' president of the AFL, messaged Reuther fol lowing the ."unanimous conven tion vote, saying: "I sincerely believe that the time is now ripe for acting to ward that (unity) goal. It is my earnest wish that we can have a meeting of the full Unity Com mittee as soon as possible." The, resolution commended "constructive progress" already made by the leaders of both un ions toward a "single trade un ion center . . which will pre serve the integrity of each af filiated national and internation al union." Says Problems Can Be Solved McDonald said he was confi dent that all merger problems could be worked out satisfactory, adding that the advantages would far outweigh the disad vantages. . "When this new trade union center comes into being," Mc Donald said, "there will be an other renaissance similar to that when the CIO came into being." .. The resolution voiced approval of successful operation of the no-raiding agreement with ' the AFL, which "the CIO has always regarded as the touchstone of our larger goal of seeking organic unity." "We commend the construe tive progress that has been made by members of the Joint AFL CIO Unity Committee and en dorse their decision to create a single trade union center in America through the process of merger." The President looked surpris ed and answered with a chuckle that it was a new one on him. McKay Tells of Applications for Northwest Power San Francisco U.R) Secre tary of the Interior Douglas McKay said today that private and public power companies in the Northwest have filed appli cations with the Federal Power commission for almost $2,000, 000,000 worth of construction. The secretary, addressing the opening session at the 45th an nual conference of the Western Forestry and Conservation asso ciation, said the new construc tion resulted from the adminis tration's natural resources "part nership program." He said the new construction will provide almost 6,000,000 kilowatts of additional power. From Local Groups "Over half these applications are from local public bodies," McKay said, "and most of the applications have been filed since announcement of the ad ministration's program." McKay said in a speech pre pared for release today that the President considers the develop ment of water resources "so im portant" that he established a Cabinet committee "to set up policy. McKay said the administra tion is urging the states to com plete their selections of federal lands still due to them. All Western states have been grant ed certain public lands for edu cational and institutional pur-, poses, McKay said. Need for Mines The secretary declared an ef ficient domestic mining indus try is an essential part of na tional defense. "Twice "within the last 15 years this country has been drawn into internation al conflicts without adequate supplies of the essential miner als and metals. This must not happen again," McKay empha sized. , Gov. Goodwin J. Knight in troduced McKay and welcomed the delegates of the Western states and Canada. 1954 Cotton Crop 13,569,000 Bales ' Washington JCU.PJ The Agri culture department reported to day that the 1954 cotton crop totaled an estimated 13,569,000 bales. The estimate, the last of the year, was up 2.7 per cent from last month's forecast of 13,206,- 000 bales. The government had hoped the current crop control pro gram would hold production to 12,000,000 bales, but record yields per acre upset this calcu lation even though the farmers planted less than the acreage al lotted them. The estimate, in addition to being the last for the season, was the last before cotton farm ers vote next Tuesday on wheth er they want to continue federal crop controls on their crop next year. Brokerage Firm Sets Bonus for Chirsfmas New York (U.R) The worlds largest brokerage firm will distribute a Christmas bon us to its employees this week ranging up to 12 weeks pay plus $200 for 20 year employees. Merrill Lynch, Fenner and Beahe said even employees with only three weeks service with the firm would be included. The bonus payments will range from $25 for those with less tnan two months service to 12 weeks salary nlus $200 for those with the firm 20 years or more. DEMAND RESTATED San Francisco (u.R) Pierre Langlois' handlers demanded again today that the World Boxing Federation , select offic ials for the Frenchman's title fight Dec. 15 against world middleweight champion Carl (Bobo) Olson. George Kantor, spokesman for the challenger, Tuesday said he took his case to state Athletic Commission Chairman Anthony Antenza and got a favorable response. Cold and Cough Bothering Pope; Exercise Urged Vatican City (U.R) Vati can sources said today Pope Pius XII has a mild cold and a dis turbing cough and is being en couraged to take exercise. These sources said the Pope was walking unaided, but with a person standing near his side j to prevent him from taking a bad fall.. Catholics Rejoice News that the Pope was able to leave his sickbed and take even a few steps made Roman Catholics rejoice on this day, the closing of the Year of Mary, a "little holy year." Thousands of pilgrims assem bled in St. Peters Square thought they saw the Pope appear at his bedroom window at noon and unleashed a deafening chorus of "Viva II Pape" (Long Live The Pope). - i But Vatican officials said later the figure they saw at the window was not that of the Pope. Authoritative sources said the Pope is still very weak and not out of danger, even though he now is eating and retaining semi solid food. Danger of Pneumonia They said there is always the danger of pneumonia or other complications when aged per sons fall ill. His heart remains in good condition, these authorities said, but his pulse fluctuates and is not entirely satisfactory. Four doctors now attending the Pope plan to see him today or tomorrow to study his pro gress. The Pope recorded a "Hail Mary" yesterday for broadcast to the world this afternoon to close the Roman Catholic Marian Year which he opened in person a year ago today at Rome's Basi lica of St. Mary Major. Don Nichols Named President of 4-H Leader Association Gold Hill About 200 Jack son county 4-H leaders, junior leaders and guests attended the annual leaders' banquet last night at the Gold Hill Grange, according to 4-H extension agents. Don Nichols, Bellview, was elected .1955 president of the leaders . association. Others in cluded John Bohnert, Central Point, reelected vice-president; Mrs. Cathryn Gibson, Howard club, secretary, and Leonard Freeman, Antelope club, reelect ed treasurer. Navy Man Wishes Fleet Could Leave Mediterranean Wash 1 n g t o n U.R) The Navy's top aviation official indi cated today that he wishes the big U.S. Sixth Fleet could be pulled out of the "narrow wa ters" of the Mediterranean. Assistant Secretary for Air James H. Smith Jr. ; said the fleet is "forced" to operate air craft carriers there because land based air forces are not availa ble to control the area or reach certain targets if need be. Mobility Said Reduced Confinement in the Mediter ranean reduces the fleet's "mo bility," Smith said. His views were expressed in a five-page criticism of a recent Los Angeles speech by British Field Marshall Montgomery who called for an end to aircraft car rier construction. Montgomery, deputy supreme commander in Europe under American Gen. Alfred M. Gruen ther, said carriers are becoming obsolete and also contended na vies do not now need air arms in narrow waters like the Medi terranean. In Area Seven Years The Sixth Fleet has been in the Mediterranean for more than seven years, sent there origin ally to help enforce the Truman doctrine of containing Commu nism when it threatened Turkey and Greece. , It has 20,000 men, 16 destroy ers, three cruisers and two car riers which could mount about 200 airplanes. There is no indication that the fleet will be pulled out of the Mediterranean. - 92-Y ear-Old Pilot Struck by Automobile Los Angeles (U.R) James Montee, 92, the oldest active licensed pilot with 4,000 hours to his credit, was bumped by an automobile Tuesday while crossing a street.
