Chief Pryde, one of the nation's 'top experts on traffic - safety, i3 a veteran police officer . who has earned a nationwide reputation for the campaign which Washington has conduct ed to cut down traffic accidents and death. The C of C, which is a good one to stick its official neck out, says: "Because of the importance of retaining a federal government system, it would appear useful to stop referring to Washington as the 'federal' government. "It would be better to call it the 'national,' 'the central' or the Washington government.'" Woman Claims Coats Switched in Restaurant New Haven, Conn. (U.R)' Mrs. Richard Schwartz has com plained to police about the high cost of living. Mrs. Schwartz said dinner in a restaurant here cost her over $300. ' She said she was wearing a $500 Persian lamb coat when she entered the restaurant and a $200 one when she left. Some one had switched coats on her. careful Ike-Knowland Meeting 'Fiction' Washington U.PJ The White House described as "newspaper fiction" today published reports that the GOP high command is trying to arrange a peace meet ing between President Eisen hower and Senate Republican Leader William F. Knowland. Press Secretary James C. Hag gerty was questioned about two of these reports. One of them said a source close to the White House had reported efforts to ar range a meeting between the President and the California sen ator. The other said members of the Cabinet wanted to get the two men together. , Knowland has differed openly with Mr. Eisenhower on Far Eastern policy. He also voted against senate condemnation of Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R Wis.), with whom the adminis tration is at odds. "I'm not going to comment on stories that have no basis of truth," Hagerty said. . Capehart To Ask Further FHA Probe Chicago U.R) Sen. Homer Capehart (R-Ind.) said he will present a resolution to the Sen ate in January asking for further investigation of the" Federal Housing Administration. , Capehart, chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking and Currency, headed most of the FHA hearings in recent months. ""We only scratched the sur face in going as far as we did," Capehart said. "I'm going to ask the Senate at the very first op portunity to continue the in quiry." . . ' ;; '. . . Capehart returned yesterday from Rio De Janeiro, where he attended an economic conference of Latin American countries and the United States. Capehart said he found most Latin American countries to be in "fairly good economic shape." Suspended Liquor Employees Back Portland U.R) Two - Oreson Liquor Control Commission em ployees were back at work in tneir former status today after Commission Chairman Lester Ireland lifted their suspensions. Thomas J. Sheridan, assistant administrator, and Floyd E. Bur ton, supervisor of stores and agencies, were susoended earlier following a governor's investiga tion into cnarges tttey had ac cepted gratuities from distiller's representatives. In ordering the two back to wors yesterday, tne commission also gave notice to emrilovees that no favors could be accepted from agents of the alcoholic bev erage industry and that violators would be discharged imme diately. A regulation to that effect is being prepared by the commis sion attorney, but a hearing must precede its adoption. . Defectives Arrested As Bribery Suspects Reno, Nev. (U.R) Two vet eran police detectives, James Franklin, 47, and Mike Saloni san, 44, were arrested yesterday for an alleged bribery conspiracy in a carefully arranged trap by the district attorney's office. District Attorney Jack Streeter refused to divulge the details of the trap, and Reno police .were not informed of the action- until the two officers were booked at county jail and released on $2000 bail. - - Streeter's deputies arrested the two detectives as they sat in their car immediately after they were alleged to have accepted $180 to "go easy" on a 'woman arrested on a false check charged. - , Police chief L. R. Greeson said both men were suspended immediately pending outcome of the case. - Myrtle Point Logger "' Faces Extortion Charge Portland (U.R) A 25-year-old Myrtle Point logger was brought to Portland Monday for a hear ing on federal charges of at tempted extortion. Junior Clyde Jemes was ar rested by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Satur day for allegedly threatening to kill Harry Dement, president of the Myrtle Point Security bank, unless Dement left a parcel con taining $10,000 at a designated spot. ' Federal agents arrested the logger "in the immediate vicini ty" of the drop-off spot, accord ing to the agent in charge of the Portland FBI office. , , - . Dec. 10 Deadline For ASC Balloting Deadline for filing ballots in the community committeemen election in Jackson county for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation program is Friday, Dec. 10 at 5 p.m., according to ASC officials. Persons not yet receiving bal lots should obtain them from the ASC office in the courthouse. All commercial 'farmers are eligible to vote. The operation is being liquidated and no buyer has been found to purchase the property as a pro ducing unit. ' - , The sprawling Doernbecher plant 6nce employed a peak of 1500 workers. Vice-President C. F. Barker said "we . have not given up hopes to sell the property as a unit." The Portland Chamber of Commerce, organized labor and other business interests are seek ing to retain the Doernbecher payrolls by finding other uses for the plant. A union spokesman said the closure would mean an. added 400 persons on Portland's unem ployment rolls.
