The Chamber of Commerce
says that the big government is
wrongly called "federal."
"Federal," the C of C figures,
equals central plus local govern
ments, and the thing in the Dis
trict of Columbia is Washing
ton government, which is hard
ly any government at all because
nobody has a vote.
The C of C, which is a good
one to stick its official neck out,
says:
"Because of the importance of
retaining a federal government
system, it would appear useful
to stop referring to Washington
as the 'federal' government.
"It would be better to call it
the 'national,' 'the central' or
the Washington government.'"

Meeting 'Fiction'
Washington U.PJ The White
House described as "newspaper
fiction" today published reports
that the GOP high command is
trying to arrange a peace meet
ing between President Eisen
hower and Senate Republican
Leader William F. Knowland.
Press Secretary James C. Hag
gerty was questioned about two
of these reports. One of them
said a source close to the White
House had reported efforts to ar
range a meeting between the
President and the California sen
ator. The other said members of
the Cabinet wanted to get the
two men together.
, Knowland has differed openly
with Mr. Eisenhower on Far
Eastern policy. He also voted
against senate condemnation of
Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R
Wis.), with whom the adminis
tration is at odds.
"I'm not going to comment on
stories that have no basis of
truth," Hagerty said. .
