H., is loaded into ambulance after helicopter brought him from crash scene. Five of the seven occupants of the plane sur vived the crash and bitter cold for two days before rescuers found them. Crime Wave Continues As More Banks Robbed Vancouver, B. C. (U.R) Gunmen defied machinegun equipped police patrols and staged two more bank hold-ups in this area that netted nearly $10,000 Friday night. Three men looted the West Vancouver branch of the Royal Bank of about $7,500 twenty minutes after a bandit had es caped with more than $2,000 from a Bank of Toronto branch in New Westminster. Pope Urges Battle On Forces of Evil Vatican City (U.R) Pope Pius XII Saturday urged chris tians to use "every means avail able'' to combat the assault of what he termed evil forces again st the church. The plea was made in a letter by the ailing pontiff to the Vicar of Rome, Clemente Cardinal Mi cara, on the occasion of the Ma rian Year closing. The text of the letter was issued by the Vatican. "The Christian religion is be ing openly attacked in many places and in the most bitter way with the violation of divine rights, by preventing holy pas tors from carrying out their task and by imprisoning them in order to eradicate religion from the minds of man people with slander and false doctrines," the Pope said. - "Almost everywhere among those who have drawn away from the church they are carry ing out a war by means of the press and the press is being used as a weapon as efficient as it is harmful," the letter said. West Coast People To Be Subpenaed Washington (U.R) A spokes man said Saturday the Senate Internal Security subcommittee has issued subpenas for five or six West Coast residents who al legedly "conducted themselves sgainst the interests of the Unit ed States while in Communist China." The subcommittee spokesman said witnesses from the Los An geles and San Francisco areas are being subpenaed to appear at an open hearing tentatively scheduled for Dec. 13 at San Francisco. ' The subpenas were issued Fri day, but the witnesses will not be identified until the subcom mittee receives word from U. S. marshals that the subpenas have been served, the spokesman said. with machineguns and tear gas in an effort to crack down on the worst crime wave in the district's history. The New Westminster bank was robbed at 5:15 p.m. when a man brandished a gun and told teller Jean Wainwright to "hand it over." He stood in line with other customers before demand ing the money, and fled from the bank with two women cus tomers chasing him. Three Holdup Men Twenty minutes after the New Westminster hold up, three "roughly dressed men entered the West Vancouver bank and told the 10 employees and four customers there to lie on the floor. "We mean business," one said. Get down on the floor." One man stood guard by the door while the other two rifled the tills. They then wished their victims a "merry Christmas" and fled in a late model "dirty green colored car. The holdups increased to eight the number of bank rob beries in the greater Vancouver area in the last 30 days. Explosives Truck 'Blows Sky High' OWatonna, Minn. (U.R) A semi-trailer truck loaded with explosives "blew sky high" early Saturday, demolishing a gas sta tion and damaging an apartment building. Witnesses said it sounded as if "the town had been bombed," but no one was hurt. . The truck was the fourth owned by the Watson Brothers Trucking company to explode within the last 14 months. Authorities said the blast oc curred when friction ignited a gasoline hose while the truck was being refueled. The huge semi-trailer was en route from St. Paul, Minn., to Demoines, la., with a load of white powder. A spark, caused when the metal end of the gasoline hose scraped the truck frame, appar ently touched off the gasoline, and spread to the cab. Soo Canal Will Be 100 Years Old in 1955 Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. (U.R) The Soo Canal, which han dles more freight in eight months each year than the Panama, Suez and Keil Canals combined do in a year, will be 100 years old in 1955. Sault Ste. Marie is planning to observe the anniversary with a huge celebration next June 30 to Aug. 11. The canal links Lakes Huron and Superior, and an average of 100 freighters pass through it each day during the shipping season, carrying iron ore from mines in Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin to steel mills. Hew Demo Chief Long Active in Politics South Bend, Ind. (U.R) Paul M. Butler, elected Saturday as national chairman of the Demo cratic party, has been an active political worker since he was old enough to vote. He never sought nor held elec tive or appointive public office . . . but rose in behind-the-scenes politics from poll-taker for the Democrats in the 1926 election to National Committeeman for Indiana. ... ' Father of Five A lawyer, he Is the father of five children. He is a friend of Adlai E. Stevenson, the 1952 Democratic presidential nominee. Butler was born in South Bend June 15, 1905, the son of James and Mary Butler. His father was appointed by President Wilson in 1914 as Indiana's Deputy Col lector of Internal Revenue. Butler has been active in every primary and general elec tion since 1926. He managed Congressional and Mayoralty campaigns in 1938, 1942, and 1948. He was elected 3rd district party chairman , in 1948, 1950, and 1952. Butler was elected National committeeman in 1952, defeating Frank McHale, 16-year member of the Democratic Na tional cpmmittee and chairman of the Party's Credentials com mittee. Butler was chairman of the Indiana delegation to the Na tional convention' in 1952, and was keynoter at the Democratic State convention in 1954. He has driven 40,000 miles at his own expense throughout Indiana as National committeeman since 1952. He was appointed member of the Executive committee of the Democratic National com mittee in 1953. (See Story on Page 1) Tunisia Outlaws Flock To Surrender Centers Tunis, Tunisia (U.R) Tuni sian outlaws ignored a Commu-, nist plea Saturday and flocked to centers set up by French-Tunisian peace teams to surrender under a joint French-Tunisian promise of amnesty. The total of soldiers of the "National Army of Liberation" who laid down their arms mount ed to 625 today and officials said that another 250 were expected today. The deadline of the govern ments' promise not to take re prisals against outlaws who sur render is Dec. 10. Eugene Man Bails Out On Income Tax Charge Portland flJ.R) Clyde L. Met calf, 34, an employee of the Eu gene Chamber of Commerce and a former employee of the in ternal revenue service, was free on $1000 bond Saturday after his arrest on a charge of failure to file an Income tax return for 1951. He was indicted by a fed eral grand jury. . - Metcalf posted bond with Dis trict Judge Chester Anderson of Eugene who acted, as a U. S. Commissioner in the case. The indictment alleged that Metcalf was an employee of the Tillamook Chamber of Com merce in 1951 and that his in come was $4665.
