Raps Nixon Rayburn was quoted as saying . he would work with President Eisenhower but not with Vice- : President Richard Nixon. Asked if he thought Nixon might succeed Mr. Eisenhower, Rayburn replied, "God forbid," ;the Item reported. The second oc curred the following Sunday v&vhen four teen-agers died after their car smashed into a truck at an intersection near Albany Defunct Bank's Funds Paid to Claimants About $800 out of some $2,000 owing depositors in the defunct Jackson County bank has been paid out as the result of a story in The Mail Tribune, Nov. 25, it was reported Saturday. Attorney Kenneth G. Den man, liquidator for the bank, which closed during the de pression, reported that funds have been held for many years for depositors, or their heirs, who were impossible to locate. A list of names of those to whom money was owed was pub lished. A number of the depositors, or their heirs, many of whom did not know they had money com ing to them, have filed claims and been paid, Denman re ported. The amounts paid varied from small amounts to consider able sums. TB Skin Tests Due At Griffin Creek Tuberculin skin tests being given by the county health de partment in a case finding pro gram will next be offered to Griffin Creek school students. The test will be given at Griffin Creek on Dec. 13, Miss Dorothy Collard, public health nursing supervisor, reported. Tests in the Ashland schools will total about 2,000 when they are, completed Monday, accord ing to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county health officer. They will be of fered at West Side school and Rogue River academy also dur ing this school year in a program reaching one-third di students in grades 1 through 12 in the coun ty. Talent students received the tests in November. The skin tests are given to pupils having written consent of parents. There is no charge. Boring Man Elected By Horticulturists Corvallis (U.R) - The Oregon State Horticultural Society had a new president Saturday in Har old Bushe, a berry grower from Boring. Busche was elected at a two-day convention that drew more than a thousand persons. Also elected to office in the state's oldest agricultural orga nization was Gordon Walker, In dependence vegetable grower, first vice-president; Ross Hukari, Hood River apple and pear grow er, second vice-president; C. O Rawlings, Oregon State College extension horticulturist, secretary-treasurer, and H. J. O'Reilly, OSC. extension plant pathologist. new coordinator of activities. "Look at this fellow McKay, (Douglas McKay) Secretary of the Interior. He was a political accident to begin with. He got to be governor of Oregon only after an airplane crash killed the governor and lieutenant-govern or," Rayburn said. - The Texan strongly denounced Vice-President Nixon for his public statements and activities in the recent congressional elec tions. COUPLE KILLED Fabens, Tex. flJ.PJ A Cali fornia couple was killed and five other persons were injured Saturday in a head-on collision 30 miles east of El Paso, Tex., on U. S. 80. The accident killed Alva Joseph Lemoine, 46, and his wife, Katherine, 30, of Lind say,. Calif. - Phoenix House Gutted By Blaze on Friday Phoenix A two-story house in Phoenix was gutted by fire about 6 p.m. Friday. It was lo cated at Fifth and Main sts. Owner is Julius Smith. Most of the furnishings were burned, but no estimate has been made yet on the damage. - The house was occupied at the time of the fire by Jesse Williams and his two sons. The fire was discovered when one son smelled smoke upstairs. Cause of the fire was believed to have been from an oil burner, which had been lit a short time before. The Phoenix Volunteer Fire department responded to the call and confined the fire to the house. Dried fruit, valued at $22,- 282,639, was the fifth most valu able export commodity shipped through the San Francisco Cus toms District in 1953. Sleep Well at the . . . . REELECT PRESIDENT Portland (U.R) R. L. Clark was re-elected as president of the Portland Chamber of Com merce Friday. Increased Shipment Of Wheat, Flour to Asia Predicted Portland U.R) A new law passed by Congress last summer will allow from 30,000, 000 to 40,000,000 more bushels of wheat and flour to be sold to Asiatic countries this year, Richard K. Baum, executive sec retary to the Oregon Wheat Growers league said Friday night. Baum told the league's annual banquet here the law provides for trade agreements in which the U.S. can accept foreign cur rency for surplus foods. The currency, in turn, can be used in part to promote, consumption of U.S. foods in foreign markets. Baum said he had recommend ed market promotion projects to" cost $10,000,000 to $20,000,000 tied in with such sales. : The law, public law 480, is the surplus agricultural commo dities disposal act passed by Congress last summer. Returns from Asia Baum recently returned from a two-month agricultural mis sion to southeast Asian markets. He said subsidies should be in creased to make U.S. wheat more competitive in that area. He also suggested growers work closely- with grain exporters and millers to see what could be done about reducing shipping rates. Walter Johnson, director of ,the U. S. Department of Agri culture's commodity stabiliza tion office, assured the group that wheat stored in mothball ships at Astoria is in good con dition and would keep for a long time. New Product . Wheat growers were told of a new product called "Ala" which is expected to give their surplus white wheat increased market outlets. The product is a modern adaptation of bulgor, food of an cient times. It ,was developed by the Fisher Flouring Mills com pany in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture John L. Locke, president of Fish er Flouring mills, said Ala" was palatable, highly nutritious, easily prepared and lent itself to customs and tradition of the Far East.
