Attlee, who used Japanese troops and artillery to quell a rebel uprising, in . To spark up a simple vanilla pudding, ; gar: nish each serving with a -xew spoonsful of ripe persimmon pulp. Va nilla ice cream or lemon ice takes on . new sparkle when a few tablespoons of mashed per simmon pulp are used as a sauce. Try this for any holiday party. Colorful Salad. Persimmon slices (they'll be ragged and un even but never mind, that) and cream cheese balls "arranged on a bed of crisp greens make a colorful and refreshingly differ ent salad. Maybe a French dress ing. - '- " Variations on Popular Mincemeat Pie Theme When it comes to mince meat pit made with any of the sev eral fine glassed or packaged mincemeats, or .your, very own make for that matter, consider these variations for"H-change. Equal parts of prepared mince meat and whole cranberry sauce; or .... . , Equal parts of prepared mince meat . and cooked, sweetened dried apricots; or Equal parts of prepared mince meat and canned sour, red pitted cherries. Pour into pastry lined pie pan; top with crust which might be plaia, criss-crossed, a star, tur key, bell, wreath or other holi day motif outline. . Bake at 425 degrees for 25 minutes or. until fjnut bubbles and crust is lightly browned. Filbert Toasting. Toasting brings out . full rich flavor of nuts; gives more -crunchy tex ture. Put shelled nuts in snai low pan and heat in 250 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes; rub off skins. Turkey Teirazzini Fine With Turkey Leftovers Comes the week after a holi day and there's turkey left "over. Lucky the family who uses some of it up like this. Six servings. 6 ounces long spaghetti Va cup turkey fat ' cup enriched flour 1 teaspoon salt V teaspoon celery salt 2 cups milk -1 boullion cube 1 to 2 cups diced cooked tur key ' V cup sliced mushrooms (4 ounce can) Vi cup grated Parmesan cheese. v Cook spaghetti in boiling salt ed water until tender. Drain and rinse. While spaghetti is cook ing, add ttoullion cube to turkey fat and melf in saucepan. Stir in flour, salt and celery salt. Add milk and boullioh;c cube and cook until thickened, stirred con stantly. Add spaghetti, twey and mushrooms. Mix well. PpttT, into greased 1A quart casserole. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Bake in moderate oven, 350 de grees, about 2 0 jminutes Serve hot. Six servings. - - Pizza Pie Good Fare For Busy Shopping Days Make a square pizza or an oblong one using whatever pan is available and use a packaged hot' roll mix or pie crust mix for the shell. Mighty good eating put together in very little time. 1 recipe pie crust mix . or hot roll mix 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 No. 2 can (2Vi cups) tomatoes 4 ounce anchovy filets Vi teaspoon salt is teaspoon pepper teaspoon oregano 3A pound Mozzarella cheese, sliced thin. Prepare pie crust or hot roll mix as directed on package. Roll out thin. Line cookie sheet or other square or oblong pan with pastry. Brush with olive oil. Spread tomatoes, anchovies and cheese over dough. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and oregano. Bake in hot oven, 400 degrees about 20 minutes. Makes x six servings. - ; Holiday Season Foods Galore As December Plentiful! Roll In This is a big year for all the traditional foods enjoyed during the holiday season. There seems to be plenty of simply every thing. Poultry good buys include not only turkey but roasting hens and geese and domestic ducks, broilers and fryers. Pork roasts and whole and half hams are specially priced in t many markets. Beef continues reason able . with bargains in ground beef, stewing and. braising cuts that require longer, slower cook ing. : ; Fruits and Nuts. Nature cer "tainlyj&as smiled on all the fine fruits for dryingr"the prunes, apricots, peaches, figs and ap ples that go into fruit cakes and puddings. . Plenty of fresh Cali fornia dates. Glaced fruits in all their splendor are handsomely glassed at reasonable cost sav ing a lot of time and energy. California, and Oregon walnuts, California almonds, Washington, Oregon and Idaho filberts; all have bumper crops. . Among fresh fruits. The hand some and luscious Winter pears are increasing in supply "right along. Apples from the north west never tasted better - and local loose apples are very good buys. Cranberries, both fresh and canned invite purchase. Grapes for decoration and for eating out-of -hand come in big, compact bunches. Light in sup ply but available in the bigger stores are tangerines, pomegran ates, pineapples and persimmons, a few papaya for color contrast and eating interest. Good sup plies of the standbys, local ap ples, lemons, oranges, grape fruit. Vegetable Buys. Fine, firm, mealy Russet potatoes, west coast grown sweet potatoes of excellent quality, bunched beets, radishes and turnips, onions, celery, eggplant, cauliflower, a little corn here and there, good squash variety, . white cabbage, spinach and tomatoes. Make the most of fresh tomatoes; soon frost will banish local supplies. Other Good Things. Eggs of all sizes are ample for increased holiday heeds. Give December meals variety with fish or shell fish at least once a week. Lots of fresh and frozen shrimp; fish fillets in good variety and plenty of canned tuna for main dishes,salads,-sandwiches. Rec ord rice crop invites its use more often. Dairy supplies con tinue, heavy with cheese a very good buy, both cottage and Ched dar; kinds. ' Reasonable ; prices mark shortenings, salad oils. is equipped with electric stove and refrigerator. The President can have a mid-flight t steak broiled if he desires. The plane's galley is manned by Master Ser geant Robert E. Hughes, Hart ford, "Conn., and Master Ser geant Jack-' M. Woodward, Adams Center, N.Y. 1 ' Some White House olcf'timers were laughing ' the other day about super - protective devices that have been installed at the executive mansion" over the years and invariably quickly discarded. One was a microphone hid den in a desk pen set in the po lice booth at the northwest gate. When a crank was being interviewed at the gate, the con versation could be monitored inside the White House. : There was also the ill-famed "wired fence" around the White House briefly- during World War II. A sensitive wire system strung around the cast-iron fence produced sounds in police booths around the grounds to indicate whether anyone was attempting to climb over. This costly sys tem was abandoned almost as soon as it was started. It turned out that squirrels and pigeons sounded just like people. - And then there was the elab orate system of electric eyes scattered 5 through the woods around the late President Roose velt's Hyde Park estate and connected-with a massive switch board which theoretically de tected prowlers. This, too, had to be abandoned after an instal lation cost rumored to be as high as $25,000. Deer and dogs oroKe the beam too frequently for the system to provide relia ble signals. The Eisenhowers now have housing which cost in excess of $6,000,000 at their disposal. This includes the White House, reno vated between 1948 and 1952 at a cost of something over $5, 800,000; "Mamie's Cabin" at the Augusta National . Golf club which cost, according to some estimates, close to $150,000; and their Gettysburg home, the re construction of which has been estimated as costing close to $100,000' exclusive of the origi nal cost of the house and farm.
