73 Believed Drowned As Shrimp Boat Sinks '"Tuxtla, Gutierrez, Mexico (U.R) A Mexican shrimp boat, overloaded with a catch of more than five tons, broke apart Sat urday in heavy seas and 13 men were reported drowned. Three crewmen survived the sinking by remaining afloat by another fishing boat. Mary Pauline, to a Los Ange les hospital. The fog delayed them, however, so Crockett assisted while his wife gave birth to a six-pound ' girl in the car. (International) U.S. Soldier of Fortune1 Ordered into Swiss Jail Geneva, Switzerland (U.R) Harold (Whitey) Dahl, American pilot and soldier of fortune, was convicted Saturday of stealing nearly $35,000 in gold bullion on a flight from Paris to Gene va and was sentenced to two years in prison. A jury of five Swiss house wives and one man took 90 min utes to reach the verdict against Dahl. who 17 years ago escaped a death sentence in the Spanish Civil war when his beautiful blonde wife appealed to Gener alissimo Francisco Franco. Barred from Nation The court also ordered Dahl, now 45, barred from the country for 10 years after his prison term. Machine Harvesting Aids Sugar Production . San Francisco (U.R) West ern Sugar Beet Producers Inc., reported Friday production has reached almost 22 per cent of the nation's sugar needs, primarily because more than 95 per cent of this year's harvesting was done with machine. The organization said the beet sugar industry this year will pro duce nearly 2,000,000 tons of sugar, representing the most effi cient beet sugar harvest' in his tory. The U. S. Department of Agri culture has figured mechaniza tion of beet sugar farming from 1950 to 1952 saved more than 3,000,000 hours of manual labor. Quick Clearance for If. S. Doctor Approved Manila (U.R) Philippine authorities Saturday authorized swift customs and immigration clearance for Dr. Robert Denton of Oakland, Calif., a top polio expert being rushed here to treat Mrs. Henry Von Kohorn of New York. Mrs. Von Kohorn, wife of a textile man, was in the Ameri can Hospital. " Dr. Denton was expected1, here early Sunday morning after an emergency flight from California with mod- , em polio equipment. Dahl, tall and balding and smartly dressed in a grey lounge suit, heard the verdict with the same composure he had display ed throughout the three- day trial. . "I am innocent," he said. He has three days to appeal to the high court in Lausanne. Held Three Months The three months he has been in custody will be deducted from the prison term. In 1937 Dahl was shot down and captured while flying for the Loyalists in the Spanish Civ il war. He was sentenced to death but his wife, Edith Rogers Dahl, a night club - entertainer interceded with Franco. She sent him her picture and Franco granted Dahl a reprieve. Action by the state department won his release in 1940. The Dahls separated shortly after his return to the United States. He later flew with the Royal Canadian Air Force in South America but was drum med out of service after being convicted by a courtmartial of "improperly disposing" of some $700 worth of equipment. Three-Car Crash Takes Man's Life . . San Francisco (U.R) Clem ent E. Baker, 69, real estate sales man, was killed instantly Satur day in a three-car collision. Baker was riding in a car driven by a prospective house buyer, Fred Gerken, when it was struck at the intersection by an auto driven by Robert J. Rugger- io, 39. Baker was thrown to the pavement, as was Gerken's eight-year-old son John who was rid ing in the back seat. John was only slightly hurt. Gerken's car spun more than 50 feet and struck another autoi Ruggerio was cited for violate ing the right of way. Michael Lazzari, 17, who was with Arrigotti at .the time, told police they were driving along a North Beach street when a car pulled alongside of them. . Lazzari said : the car forced them to the curb, a youth jumped out. He ran over and started stabbing Arrigotti with a knife. Arrigotti suffered three wounds, one in the back which punctured the left chest cavity and possibly his lung, the two other slashes on his left arm. . ; :: Lazzari said he and Arrigotti jumped Out of their car and ran to a nearby building. It was the largest increase of any week this year. It was at tributed to purchase by member banks of substantial amounts of Commodity Credit Corp. certi ficates of interest, although there was some increase in the use of bank credit.
