U.S. Soldier of Fortune1
Ordered into Swiss Jail
Geneva, Switzerland (U.R)
Harold (Whitey) Dahl, American
pilot and soldier of fortune, was
convicted Saturday of stealing
nearly $35,000 in gold bullion
on a flight from Paris to Gene
va and was sentenced to two
years in prison.
A jury of five Swiss house
wives and one man took 90 min
utes to reach the verdict against
Dahl. who 17 years ago escaped
a death sentence in the Spanish
Civil war when his beautiful
blonde wife appealed to Gener
alissimo Francisco Franco.
Barred from Nation

now 45, barred from the country
for 10 years after his prison
term.
Machine Harvesting
Aids Sugar Production .
San Francisco (U.R) West
ern Sugar Beet Producers Inc.,
reported Friday production has
reached almost 22 per cent of the
nation's sugar needs, primarily
because more than 95 per cent of
this year's harvesting was done
with machine.
The organization said the beet
sugar industry this year will pro
duce nearly 2,000,000 tons of
sugar, representing the most effi
cient beet sugar harvest' in his
tory. The U. S. Department of Agri
culture has figured mechaniza
tion of beet sugar farming from
1950 to 1952 saved more than
3,000,000 hours of manual labor.

If. S. Doctor Approved
Manila (U.R) Philippine
authorities Saturday authorized
swift customs and immigration
clearance for Dr. Robert Denton
of Oakland, Calif., a top polio
expert being rushed here to treat
Mrs. Henry Von Kohorn of New
York.
Mrs. Von Kohorn, wife of a
textile man, was in the Ameri
can Hospital. " Dr. Denton was
expected1, here early Sunday
morning after an emergency
flight from California with mod-
, em polio equipment.
Dahl, tall and balding and
smartly dressed in a grey lounge
suit, heard the verdict with the
same composure he had display
ed throughout the three- day
trial. .
"I am innocent," he said. He
has three days to appeal to the
high court in Lausanne.
Held Three Months
The three months he has been
in custody will be deducted
from the prison term.
In 1937 Dahl was shot down
and captured while flying for
the Loyalists in the Spanish Civ
il war. He was sentenced to
death but his wife, Edith Rogers
Dahl, a night club - entertainer
interceded with Franco. She
sent him her picture and Franco
granted Dahl a reprieve. Action
by the state department won his
release in 1940.
The Dahls separated shortly
after his return to the United
States. He later flew with the
Royal Canadian Air Force in
South America but was drum
med out of service after being
convicted by a courtmartial of
"improperly disposing" of some
$700 worth of equipment.
