m m w SIXTEEN MEDFOHD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, NoTen&er 21, 1954 Essay Contest Now Open for Students Of State's Schools The seventh annual national assay contest on employment of the physically handicapped, op en to all high school juniors and seniors, is now under way. "A Decade of Progress in Era ploying the Handicapped" is the title of this year's contest essays. National prizes are $1,000 for firstr $400, second; $300, third; $200, fourth, and $100 for fifth. State prizes will be given to win neirs in bonds with $100 to first, $50 to second, $25 each to third, " fourth and fifth. Five National Winners The essay winning first place in Oregon will be entered in the national contest. Five winners in the, national contest will re ceive a trip to Washington, D.C.-, with expenses paid in addition to prize money. The "Disabled American Veterans contribute the prizes on the national level. The Oregon Machinists council and Portland Aerie No. 4, -Fra ternal Order of Eagles, contrib ute the state prizes. Last year's Oregon prize winner was a sen ior in Echo High school, and she wtJh third place in the na tional contest. This is the only contest spon sored by the federal government and is approved by tne National Association of Secondary School Principals. Superintendents, high school principals, and tea chers have given enthusiastic endorsement to this contest. Full particulars will be mailed to all high school principals in Ore ; gon. February 15, 1954 is the dead line for entering essays. Medford Banker Elected by Group Eston ' Humphrey, assistant manager of the Medford branch, United States National bank, was elected president of th Southern Oregon' Bankers asso ciation during a semi-annual dinner meeting last week at Grants Pass. He is the retiring vice-president ' of the group. Elected vice-president was E. Allen Teagarden, Cave Junc tion, of the. Bank of Illinois Valley. Gordon E. Miller, assis tant cashier of the Ashland branch, First National Bank of Portlandwas elected, secretary teasurer. i' y C M. Packer, assistant man ager of the Grants Pass branch of the First National bank, is the retiring president, and Dick Isaacs, manager of the Central Point branch, First , National bank, is the retiring secretary treasurer. - Jim Randall, manager of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Portland branch, was the main speaker at the meeting. Public Accountants Hear of Tax Meet The Rogue valley chapter of the Oregon Association of Pub lic Accountants met at the Elk's club in Ashland last week. Vice chairman Edith Gifford presid ed.
