Essay Contest Now
Open for Students
Of State's Schools
The seventh annual national
assay contest on employment of
the physically handicapped, op
en to all high school juniors and
seniors, is now under way.
"A Decade of Progress in Era
ploying the Handicapped" is the
title of this year's contest essays.
National prizes are $1,000 for
firstr $400, second; $300, third;
$200, fourth, and $100 for fifth.
State prizes will be given to win
neirs in bonds with $100 to first,
$50 to second, $25 each to third,
" fourth and fifth.
Five National Winners
The essay winning first place
in Oregon will be entered in the
national contest. Five winners
in the, national contest will re
ceive a trip to Washington, D.C.-,
with expenses paid in addition
to prize money. The "Disabled
American Veterans contribute
the prizes on the national level.
The Oregon Machinists council
and Portland Aerie No. 4, -Fra
ternal Order of Eagles, contrib
ute the state prizes. Last year's
Oregon prize winner was a sen
ior in Echo High school, and
she wtJh third place in the na
tional contest.
This is the only contest spon
sored by the federal government
and is approved by tne National
Association of Secondary School
Principals. Superintendents,
high school principals, and tea
chers have given enthusiastic
endorsement to this contest. Full
particulars will be mailed to all
high school principals in Ore
; gon.
February 15, 1954 is the dead
line for entering essays.

Grants Pass. He is the retiring

the main speaker at the meeting.
