The Series 62 four-door sedan shown in the top picture will be shown at Skinner's Garage, 143 South Riverside ave. The lower picture shows the Eldorado convertible sports coupe, powered by a 270-horsepower V-8 engine. On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Women are repeatedly accused of being nonstop talkers. The ladies do converse considerably but that is only at all female gatherings. When with, men, the women hardly ever get a chance to get a word in edgewise. They have to listen. Recently. I travel ed on a nonstop plane from coast to coast. In a nearby seat were a man and woman, - evidently husband and wife. The woman hardly had a chance to say a half dozen words in eight hours! The man talked on and on. And then on some more. v Bookshops Stupidity continues to prevail in many bookshops. A man I know seeking a certain book was told in a Fifth Avenue bookshop it was "out of print." My friend asked where he could get it. The clerk answered, "I am sure 1 haven't the slightest idea." I am no book sales expert but I told the man twelve places where he might get the book. Incidentally, if seeking an out of print book write the following organiza ' tions: The Fourth Avenue Book sellers, the Seven Book Hunters and the Antiquarian Bookshhop, all of New York City. They never give up trying to get a cus tomer -an out of print book. Over There A foreigner visiting England can, for the . payment of the equivalent of about one dollar a week, receive free medical, hos pital, dental and eye treatment. That is, he can enjoy same priv leges as British citizens do under their national health plan. Many people from European countries are reported taking advantage of this. They travel from their native land to Britain, pay the one dollar fee and then get free treatment. Many have their teeth fixed. Others get free eye treat ment, including free spectacles. Small Fellows - "Only a woman understands a woman's ills." That was once the slogan of Lydia Pinkham, cele brated purveyor of patent medi cines. "Only a small man under stands a small man's problems," might be a good slogan for the Moskovitz brothers, clothing store operators in San Francisco. All three of these brothers are under 5 feet 5. They specialize in attire for the short fellows. Page Boys .-; Vocal paging in hotel lobbies should be abandoned. It, is old fashioned. Also very irritating to some people. Why not an illumi nated board on which the name of the man being paged could be flashed? Or have you a better idea for silent paging? Asides . KU.R) Richard Simpson of Smicksburg nearly caught an owl when he went night fishing recently on Little Mahoning Creek. He had just made a cast . when the owl swooped out of the darkness, grabbed the plug and took off for the tree. Simpson found the plug among some rocks nearby where the owl had dropped at. Have only been two traffic tickets in our family in twenty years and we couldn't get down town to settle" them quick enough the next day. Dancing " Why do women wear long evening gowns to dancing par ties? Isn't the short gown more practical for tripping the light fantastic. Then consider the threat of the long gown to the lady's partner. He is afraid he, may step on it. Why, sir, if a man stepped on a Dior evening gown and ripped it, the wearer might kill him. And any all-woman jury Would probably vote it justi fiable homicide. It could be that the woman who wear long gowns do not have the streamlined limbs so necessary for a short gown. There are 19 new colors, which provide for a wide range of color combinations in two-tone styles. There are available also many new upholstery and trim options in the various models in the three series offered ,this year. One of them, the "glamour" trim, features metallic thread com bined with grain leather. Greatest Change The Eldorado convertible shows the greatest styling change, with visible evidence of influence by jet and rocket type aircraft. The grille is capped by a wider, lower hood, and the lines move back and the high fin and jet exhaust character istics. Among the engineering changes in the 1955 models are the 250 horsepower V-8 engine, power steering, Hydra-Matic transmis sion and automatic windshield washer and coordinator, all as standard equipment. Tubeless tires are also stand ard on all models. Optional equipment available includes power brakes, air condi tioning, radio, heater and de froster, tinted glass, electric-eye lowering of light beams, power window lifts and other luxury items. Toy manufacturers, who are chalking up their first billion dollar year with record Christ mas sales, report that space suits and other "science fiction" toys have a ' pertain drawing power but the tastes of American boys are a little old-fashioned, if not downright reactionary. ."It may surprise people to know that steam locomotives outsell diesels four to one in electric trains," said C. E. Hjelte of Louis Marx & Co., the world's fargest toymaker. "Freight cars move faster sell faster, that is than stream-lined passenger cars. The kids want a train to haul something, like a real train does." Child psychologists and edu cators agree that today's boy like his father is more interest ed in "play value" and "partici- Textbook Board Will Give Schools Multiple Choice Salem U.R) The State Board o f Textbook Commissioners, which met here this week, adopt ed a multiple selection of text books for use in the public schools of Oregon in the teach ing of art, home-makmg, music, social studies, biology, physics and physical science. The adop tion is for a six-year period be ginning July 1, 1955. Local school districts will se Iect from the multiple list of state adopted textbooks. Recommendations Considered , In selecting the textbooks, the commissioners considered recom mendations of regional teacher evaluation committees and lay individuals: and grpups which at the invitation of the board ex amined textbooks being submit ted for adoption. An analysis of the recommendations made by 32 regional evaluation commit tees made up of more than 200 teachers, and the books adonted by the commission, indicates that su per cent of the texts receiv ing first place recommendations by the committees were adopted by the commission. A total of Z13 first choices were adopted; 24 first choices were not adonterl. Lay comment on the two most criticized books raneed frnm eight and one-half pages of single spaced typewritten copy to a one- wora comment "Nuts." C Knudson, director of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration cen tral office, visited the station Wednesday and conferred with Dr. C. K. Todd, chief medical of ficer, regarding the problem of rehabilitation here. Dr. Knudson discussed details with Dr. Samuel D. Earhart, in charge of physical medicine at the domiciliary, and with Herb ert Daniels, social sercive chief, who is assisting in the classifica tion work.. Sheridan, suspended as assistant adminis trator for the Oregon Liquir Control Commission, has been postponed at his request. Sher idan, charged with accepting funds from a distillery represen tative, asked, for the postpone ment because, he said, his coun sel was out of town.
