(U.R) A Russian-born . displaced per son who was given a job as' jan itor at Juniata college here in 1950 returned to the school this fall as an instructor in modern languages. George T. Dolnikowski, 36, who has also worked as a coun terman, dishwasher and cook, received employment at the col lege through the efforts of the Church of the Brethren which arranged for him to come to the United States in December, 1949. He enrolled in a course in American history, wishing to get acquainted with the background of the country in which he sought citizenship. In 1952 he was awarded an" A.8. degree at Juniata. Last June, Dolnikowski earn ed his master degree with dis tinction in German literature at the University of Pennsylvania. and now he. has begun working on his doctorate. Dolnikowski served in the Red Army during World War II and was a prisoner of the Nazis for more than two years. In 1945 when he was freed, he decided not to return to Russia and he found work in Salzburg, Austria. Five years later he came to this country. - LIGHT TRICK Memphis, Tenn. THE CALCIUM DEPOSIT BUGABOO I do not know, and I have yet -to find any scientific evi dence to show, whether an in take of large A morHrinal Hncpc or an excessive quantity of cal cium, with or without vita min D, daily over a period of weeks o r months, may cause "de posits" of cal- Dx. Hurlock cjum jn any part of the body. But that is a matter for the physician to de cide the physician who pre scribes large doses of calcium. Certainly no one has shown that the quantity of of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D I rec oirimend for daily consumption exceeds what nutrition author ities generally estimate as desir able to maintain optimal nutri tion. Massachusetts reader writes that for two years her husband has been supplementing his diet with the daily intake of calcium, phosphorus, and D I suggest in the pamphlet Calcium and Rheu matic (for which send stamped, self-addressed envelope), and this has helped him more than anything . . . but a doctor saw the calcicaps one day and told her husband to throw them away unless he wanted to get arthritis. The doctor said that anyway cal cium is needed only by preg nant women ... It is true that pregnant women generally need a daily ration of calcium and vitamin D to sup plement N their diet. Nursing mothers need it just as much. Growing children too. It is well to remember that vi tamin D is an aid to, if not es sential for, the normal utiliza tion of calcium in the body. Many readers seem to think they are following my advice if they take calcium tablets, pills, etc., for a while. Although many report bene fits from this understandable if you know the functions of calci um m physiology , I regret that these half-informed people learn that calcium is good medicine for certain common complaints yet fail to learn that calcium is good food to prevent such com plaints, i I do not advise people to take calcium tablets, pills, or other medicinal preparations of calci um. This is for the attending physician's judgment. Ideally everyone should get his or her daily ration of calcium (which nutrition authorities estimate to be .from 15 to 20 grains) from milk and other dairy products, neas, beans, greens, peanuts, and nuts; and his or her vitamin D from exposure of skin to sun shine or skyshine (daylight in the shade). This presupposes that every child or adult con sumes at least lVz pints (three large glasses) of milk or the equivalent in such products as cheese, buttermilk, skim milk or separator milk or "fatless" milk (to you, Ninnyhammer), fancy sour milk (such as Acidophilus, Bulgarian fermented skimmed milk, Yoghurt, etc.). No, I shall not even mention here any of the common com plaints attributable to calcium deficiency. But I'll tell you what I'm going to do I'll do almost anything for two bits, you know. I'm odd the women in town shun me because I've had three babies naturally and nursed them all -until they were about 8 months old, without supplementary feeding. May be I've encouraged a few others to try, but by the time doctors and nurses got hold of them, not one nursed more than three weeks.
