TEK MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday NoTtrabr IS. 1854 Bus Company Ordered To Continue Service : Longview (U.R) The Long view Bus Company, which was scheduled to end its services in this area tonight, will continue to operate format least two weeks following a last-minute order by the Washington State Public Service Commission. George E. Ruth, bus company manager and assistant vice-pres-tdent of Long-Bell Lumber com pany, which owns the line, an nounced yesterday morning that bus service would cease tonight. The company had asked authorization to discontinue serv ice some time ago as a result of increasing costs, decreasing patronage and the absence of profits since 1947. But late yesterday, the com mission intervened and ordered the company to continue its serv ice for two weeks. Gold Hill Gold Hill Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dotson . and daughter Teresa from Southern California were recent visitors in Gold Hill. He is the son of Mrs. Mayebelle Rains and the brother of John nie Rains. While here he also visited his grandmother Mrs. George Dorman and other rela tives. While Charles Johnson is home ill with the flu, David Kell is delivering the Mail Tribune In his place. Mrs. Susie Coy was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital last week for medical care. Earl S. Courtney, retired from the United States Navy after 20 yean service -has brought, his wife and son to the west coast to live. Robinson Jr., 21, to day faced a new trial on charges of robbing two taxicab drivers after the jury at his first trial which became "hopelessly dead locked" was dismissed. Superior Judge Allen T. Lynch set a retrial for Feb. 14 last night when jury foreman John Bresnik reported the panel, after nearly six and a half hour de liberation, was deadlocked at 11 to 1 in favor of acquittal. Young Robinson was allowed to remain free on $10,000 bail, which had been posted previous ly by his famed , father, movie tough guy Edward G. Robinson. Nasser Takes Over Presidency of Egypt Cairo, Egypt-OJ.R) Youthful Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser took over the functions of the presidency today and promised the West that Egypt will always keep the Suez Canal open to world shipping. Nasser assumed the additional responsibilities . in a swift, move by the Revolutionary Council to consolidate its power follow ing the overthrow of President Mohammed Naguib. Naguib's office will remain vacant 1 until the electorate chooses his successor. The coun cil itself assumed his "executive powers." There are 12 sections to the conference this year. Postal Experiment With Mail Under Way Portland (U.R) A Post Of fice experiment with airborne three-cent mail got underway, here yesterday afternoon with the arrival of the first load of mail under the plan from San Francisco. Albert J. Robertson, assistant postmaster general for finance; Abe McGregor Goff, post office solicitor, and Gerald Cullinan, confidential assistant to Post master General Arthur E. Sum merfield, accompanied the ship ment. S. G. Schwartz, regional opera tions manager for the post of fice, said an estimated 1,000,000 pieces of first, class and other priority letter mail would be carried daily between 19 points in Washington, California and Oregon. The new method is ex pected to speed delivery by 24 to 48 hours. FOR ALMA MATER Boston U.R) A survey tak en at Boston University indi cates that more students are choosing the alma maters of their parents, brothers and sis ters. Of the 2,444 freshmen last year, 138 were offspring-of old grads as compared with 68 the previous year. The ratio of brothers and sisters of grads was 207 to 180.
