We congratulate the Yeung Republicans ! In their recent state convention here they 'came out, with only one dissenting vote, for upholding the Watson committee in its unanimous recommendation for a vote of censure against Joe McCarthy. Now let more of the older members of the party follow suit, and join their offspring. TTHE issue of McCarthy and "McCarthyism" should 1 be a bi-partisan issue, just as the issue of foreign affairs should be and usually is. There should be no partisan split on the general principles of the Eisenhower foreign policy, and there should be . none' regarding the junior Senator from Wisconsin, his threat to this democracy, and the nec essity of a united opposition against him and his un principled methods, regardless of party politics. The latter are simply 100 bad, just as the main principles of the present administration's foreign pol icy and against isolationism are fundamentally sound and good. ' The Young Republicans of Oregon have shown the way. .. .. Here is hoping their elders follow suit, and don't delay too long. R.W.R. Another Good Idea One of the Young Republican speakers suggested another move by the organization namely advocating a more "liberal" party policy, maintaining the time has come to replace the -old, worn-out parts of the GOP machinery in this state with some new ones. Again excellent advice! And it is to the self-interest of the Republican party that this be done. . FOR while the recent election was very close, there were unmistakable signs that the ' worm at last has turned. Oregon can no longer be depended upon to be a one-party state. There was evidence in the close results throughout that many of the voters are tired of the same old crowd, running the politics of the state in the same old way, without vision or enlightenment. ' '' There was indeed a revolt against the"ultra-con-servative Republican viewpoint, and it is a pretty safe prediction, that if the majority party doesn't read the writing on the wall THIS time, they may get even a bigger jolt two years hence. IT IS interesting to note, in this connection, that this demand for a house-cleaning and a more liberal attitude in the Republican leadership was urged by the leading Republican, newspaper in this state, the uregonian, tne aay alter tne results were Known. Taking these two similar viewpoints together, the Young Republicans on one hand, and the conserva tive but perceptive Oregonian on the other, and it should be plain, we think, to the party rank and file in Oregon that the time has come to take their bear ings, to realize their party-ship has wandered off the course and put it back. They should, as the Oregon ian advised, get more in harmony .with the political facts of life, more in tune with the fundamental prin ciples of the party, as represented by. Abraham Lin coin and Theodore Roosevelt! R.W.R. Matter of Fact 'Revolt Against Intelligence'9 v We don't know how many people take the "Ore gon Voter" and how many who do, take its politics seriously. We hope not many - ' ::- . For it really represents a type of extreme partisan ship that has become almost extinct in the country, except in the more benighted circles of the declining Hearst and Pegler journalistic empire, or the inner recesses of the Union League Tap-Room. Listen to this from trie Voter for example, quote: One can only hope for the best but fear the worst from Oregon's political Katzehjammer Kids who will occupy the state's Senate seats in the 84th Congress. Neither of them has yet shown any impressive capacity for objectivity. Both seem to function weU as wreckers but poorly as builders. Both incline to use legislative service as a means rather than anend, a fact that no doubt explains their relative futility to date. It is a time to fervently pray that God will save our great state. TN OTHER words because the people of the state, A ; at least a majority of them chose State Senator Neuberger, instead of Senator Cordon for the U.S. Senate the great state of Oregon is doomed to ruin UNLESS there is some sort of divine intervention! Once more, how silly can we get? What are the facts? Instead of Morse and Cordon who never, agreed on anything or worked together for any common goal, we have two Oregonians who whether one agrees or disagrees with their political beliefs, pan hnth h de pended upon to work tosrether. Yin fact tn revert-, tv the Oregonian again, that 100 per cent Republican paper, declared a few days ago that Dick Neuberger was one of the most intelligent men in the state) .But JNeuDerger, as everyone knows, favors public power as a check on private power; he opposes "Mc Carthyism" and has the courao-e tn the liberal line in general including his strong support ui ""6"uuvyci iuicigxi jjuucies, so ne is one Aatz- enjammea twin, wayne Morse is the other ! MC CARTHY AND THE SOUTHERNERS Washington The attitude of his fellow Senators toward Jo seph McCarthy is interesting, and it sheds a good deal of light on the real nature of the struggle now going on in the Senate. There is a small band of Sen-ators--estimated between twelve and twenty who will stick with McCarthy come what may. These men are variously moti vated by admiration for Mc Carthy's demogogic ability, by fear, and, of course, by cold po litical calculation. There are also, it should be said, at least a handful who genuinely like McCarthy and enjoy his company. Prominent among these are Jenner of In diana, and Welker of Idaho, Mc Carthy's self-appointed floor manager in the present fight. . Then there is another group, somewhat ' larger, of Senators who detest not only what Mc Carthy stands for but the man himself. This group would in clude, among the Democrats, men like Fulbright of Arkansas, Lehman of New York, Douglas of Illinois, and tradition-minded men like Duff of Pennsylvania and Cooper of1 Kentucky among the Republicans. According to those who know him well, there is reason to put the powerful and intensely conservative Mil likin of . Colorado in this group although he has never spoken out publicly against McCarthy. Finally, there is or as until recently a very much larger group of men who have tried for a long time to pretend that McCarthy does not exist. Among Republicans in this category the three Republicans on the cen sure committee Watkins of Utah, Case of South Dakota, and Carlson of Kansas are entirely typical. But the hard core of this group is found among the con servative Southern Democrats, especially the respected older men like George and Russell of Georgia. It is necessary to -understand the attitude of these men. , To the true Southern conser vative, the Senate is a body of immense distinction. They are apt to call it, not simply "The Senate," but, The Senate of the United States," and a man can hardly aspire higher than' to be a "United States Senator." BUT to these men, the" Senate is not 'only heroes and states men. It is also a club for ol Mends, made all the more agree able by reason of the special Senate atmosphere the snuff boxes, the blackr leather easy By Joseph . and Stewart Afsop chairs in the Members' Lobby, the meaningless, traditional phrases like "My distinguished colleague Joe McCarthy, obviously, does not fit easily into this atmos phere. Indeed, he does not fit into it at all. But for a very long time the Southerners succeeded in disregarding McCarthy there was nothing, after all, that could be done about him, so the next best thing was to pretend that he did not exist. In the last few months, how ever, certain things have hap pened to shatter this attitude. Partly, of course, this is the doing of McCarthy himself. It is hard to disregard a Senator who calls a fellow Senator "a living miracle ... . . without brains or guts," and under any circum stances it has become harder and harder to pretend that Mc Carthy does not exist. : But that is not all. Much as they may dislike their Northern colleagues, the Southern conser vatives have a real feeling about the Democratic party. McCarthy called the Democratic party the '.'party of treason." Thomas E. Dawey came rather close to say ing the same thing. And the line which Vice-President Nixon took toward the close of the campaign in which he portrayed the Dem ocratic party as the party of war and of "softness on Com munism," really put the cap on it, as far as the Southerners were concerned. .. Nixon has been, of course, a leader in the effort to find some "compromise" on the McCarthy issue. To have a chance of suc cess, any compromise plan must have some Democratic votes, to .make up for the Republicans who will vote for nothing less than censure. The place to look for these Democratic votes, was, obviously, among the Southern ers and the conservatives. ; rpHE Southerners have now, in A effect, flatly told Nixon and the other comprisers f'no deal." They said "no deal" in the form of the eloquent speech by Sen. Stennis of . Mississippi, calling strongly f or censure on , the grounds of "political morality." Stennis, himself a respected younger, member of the South ern group, certainly discussed what he was going to say with the Soutbern leaders, and, with Democratic Leader Lyndon Johnson as well. It" is conceivable, bat only just . conceivable, that the Dem ocratic lines will break.; But if the Democratic lines hold' on Mc Carthy, they may well hold on, Rudy Wilhelm Led Multnomah Ticket Portland AJ.R) Rudie Wil helm Jr., Republican, . led the Multnomah county state senator ticket with 96,886 votes, accord ing to James W. Gleason, regis trar of elections. Gleason said the official tally gave Phil Brady, Democrat, the other senator-elect from the county, a total of 96,344 votes. As for examples: "My Wife's Gone to the Country, Hooray!" and "I Can Dance with Anybody but My Wife." However, in the cur rent musical hit, "Fanny," there is a touching ballad praising a matrimonial mate titled "To My Wife." I think it is the best song in the show. Check on it. Per haps you would like to get a re cording of it to enclose in a present to your wife. ' Over" There A man in England built an automobile that may make him millionaire in a very4 brief time even with taxes what they are. This is a two seater car. The man built it for $280. Mass production would, of course. make that cost much lower. This little car can do 50 miles an hour. It can travel 90 miles to the gallon of gasoline. The high ly skillful mechanic who built this car at home is a young fel low named Tom Karen. His car would be ideal for an extra car to be used by a wife as a shop ping car. Or for getting to a canasta party or a beauty shop in a hurry when Papa has taken the family car. to the office. Horses & Women . As I may have observed, those short clipped hair-dos some fe males feature look a little silly to me. On the other hand, some of the long haired styles make a woman look slightly ridicu lous. I mean it doesn't seem ap propriate for a 30 or 40 year old woman to wear hair hanging down tKe back like Alice in I Wonderland. No Smoking The other night inside a New York City theater I saw in the vicinity of a "No Smoking" sign over a hundred people puff ing on highly inflammable ciga- rets. The kind that keep on burning when thrown away. The "No Smoking" sign was 1 put there by the fire department in the interests of fire prevention. I didn't see any fireman around.
