Newspaper Page TextDAV Auxiliary District Session To Be Held Today During a business meeting November 9 in DAV hall, the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary to Jackson county unit 8, announced three events to take place next week. A district meeting will be held today at 10 a.m., at the Veterans Hall, Grants Pass. Dinner will be serv ed at noon and those attending are requested to take a covered dish. The sewing club will meet with Mrs. Lynn Elliott, 5i3 Ore gon Terrace, Thursday, Novem ber 18, at 11 a.m., with a potluck dinner served at noon. The third event will be a meeting of the Junior auxiliary Saturday, No vember 20, at 2 p.m., at the home of Mrs. Harvey Cassman, Sev enth and Cherry streets, Central Point. The girls are to meet at the Sun Kay Venetian Blind company, 1617 North Riverside avenue, and Mrs. Clifton Heeter will take them to Mrs. Cassman's home. Each junior is to take a gack lunch. Mrs. William Badurina was initiated by the commander, Mrs. Tran WatfipM. Mrs. . Ray Ahart - was advanced from junior vice- mander and Mrs. Everett Gris om was elected to fill the office of junior vice-commander. , Mrs Ed Neff reported on the rummage sale held during the day. Mrs. Neff also said she at tended the VAVS meeting and they are now planning the Christmas party for Camp White. The auxiliary will help with this party. Mrs." Elliott andMrs. John Crocker , went to Camp White October 27 to help entertain some of the veterans. Auxiliary members help at Camp White the fourth Wednesday of every month as part of their hospital program. The chapter will meet November 23, at Camp White and auxiliary members are to furnish and help serve pies. The committee will be Mrs. Effie Reynolds, Mrs. Neff, and Mrs. Heeter. ' Year's Work Reviewed By Past Noble Grands; Plan Christmas Party Reports of the year's work! were made at a meeting ot unve Rebekah Past Noble Grands club when they met Thursday at the Girls Community club, and a gift of money was given for the Odd Fellows lodge. Mrs. A. H. Gregory, president, presided for the business meet ing. - ; A Thanksgiving day program was conducted. During the year various types of entertainments have been sponsored to raise money to give toward a new stove for the IOOF hall kitchen. Some of the mem bers gave breakfasts" while oth ers entertained at card or "come as you are," parties and other means. The November committee was Mrs. E. W. Pease, chairman of refreshments, and Mesdames Taylor, Kight and Stover. Enter tainment was furnished by Mrs. Orpha Wendell. An annual Christmas party and turkey dinner 'are planned at the IOOF hall. The program is being prepared by Mrs. W. H. Dyer, and Mrs. Carl Pearson is dinner chairman with Mrs. E. D. Scripter, Mrs. Floyd Murray, Mrs. James Fleming and Mrs. A. H. Gregory assisting. BPWC to Hear Dr. Paul Olsen Dr. Paul Olsen, Shady Cove, will speak for the November business meeting of Medford Business and Professional Wom en's club to be held at Tally Ho Thursday, November 18, at 6:15 p. m. The membership commit tee is in charge of the program. Dr. Olsen, owner of the "En chanted Grotto" and a member of Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral club, will speak to the group. Initiation of new members will take place with the emblem committee conducting the initia tion ceremony. Returned Traveler Speaks for Club; Luncheon Planned Mrs. Iva Murray who visited the British Isles last summer, spoke informally at a social meeting of Altrusa club held Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Maizie Daily. Intrpduced by Mrs. Edith Baker, Altrusa's international relations chairman, Mrs. Murray praised the friendliness and cour tesy of the people she met in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and she was enthusiastic over the beautiful and well cared for gardens which seemed to thrive in the constant rain bet ter than the tourists. Instead of the usual trophies of wool and china, Mrs. Murray showed the group bits of heather and rock, a fragrant chunk of peet from Ireland, a sort of sea moss food used to thicken soup, and a feather shed by one the black ravens that strut about the execution corner in the court yard within the Tower of Lon don. In the meeting following, Mrs. Eertha Haskins, "president, ap pointed a project committee. Mrs. Enid Rankin is chairman and she will be assisted by Mrs. Bereth Hopkin, Mrs. Judy Stoll, Mrs. Kay Crowell, Miss Grace Smith, Mrs. Maude Codding, Mrs. Virginia Sherwood ' and Miss Lotus Eaton. Miss Eaton, program chair man, presented year books just comDleted and announced an in formal luncheon to be held at the Elks club. Saturday noon, November 27, during the Thanks giving holidays. Mrs. Maizie Dailv and Mrs. Adrienne Dippel were hostesses for the evening and served re Gardeners Hear Dr. Higdon Talk On 'Good Earth' Dr. John Higdon of the South ern Oregon Experiment station was main speaker for Medford Garden club Thursday. His topic was "Good Earth" and he spoke on soil structure and effect of moisture, natural rainfall and irrigation. He compared Eastern coast soil with younger western soil. Guests for the afternoon were Mrs. E. H. DeGamma, Mrs. Chris Wolff, Mrs. Mabel Quackenbush, Mrs... Mabel Penland and Mrs. Thomas W. Carter. Prizes were won by Mrs. C. L. Goff and Mrs. H. J. Ticknor. Mrs. O. H. Tice and her com mittee were in charge of the tea and social hour. Bethel to Meet Medford bethel of Job's Daughters will meet Wednesday, November 17, at the Masonic Temple at 7:30 p.m. All members of Medford DeMolay are invited as special guests. Phone 2-8992 Mrs. Earl Bigalow Legion, Auxiliary Plan Conference In Ashland Friday The annual district conference of the American Legion and auxiliary will be held at the Elk's building in Ashland Fri day, November 19. The after noon will be devoted to round table discussions and instruction in the service activities of the organizations. A dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and reserva tions should be made with Mrs. Ross Menneci. The evening meet ings will continue the informa tion sessions. ' Mrs. Earl Bigalow, Medford auxiliary president of district 13, and will preside at the auxiliary sessions. Emil Krieger, district commander for the Legion, will be in charge of the American Le gion meetings. In addition to the district of ficers, a number of officials of the Oregon department will be present as guests, and to take part in the program. Legion dig nitaries will include Oregon's commander Carl Moser and state adjutant Joe McDonald, as well as George Shaw who is the serv ice officer. Auxiliary officers ex pected to attend are Mrs. Guy wucox, Oregon president; Mrs. Harold Leach, vice-president; and Mrs. Mae Whitcomb, secre tary. A number of Medford mem bers of the American Legion and auxiliary will attend the after noon and evening sessions. Medford American Legion auxiliary met November 9 at the Legion home, with the vice-president, Mrs. H. W. Gifford, pre siding. Mrs. Merle Jarmin reported on the success of the rummaee sale held November 4 and 5. She I expressed appreciation to the members who helped with the sale, and for the patronage of the public. It was announced that the annual bazaar and bake sale will be held Saturday November 20, at the Home Appliance com pany. Members with donations to be collected may call Mrs. Gif- iora. , . Plans were completed for ip Veterans' Day breakfast which was served at the Legion club Dy members of the auxiliary. Mrs. Sigalow renorted on the services of the child welfare committee. Veterans m - hosDitals haw begun work on the memorial poppies, and the Medford unit has ordered 6,500 for the annual Poppy Day which is held in May. Past Chief's Club To Make Sale Plans Past Chiefs club members plan a Christmas sale which will be discussed during a meeting Wednesday, Hovember 17, at the home of Mrs. Mabel Nicholson, 821 North Central avenue. The session is slated for 8 p.m. Pythian .Sisters will meet Tuesday, November 16, at 8 pjn. in the Pythian building. BREAKFAST CLUB PLANS INSTALLATION Installation of officers and a dinner are scheduled for a Cred it Women's Breakfast club meet ing to be held at the Oakwood motel dining room at Phoenix, Monday, November 15, at 7:30 p. m. ' ' Daughters Change Date of Session The monthly meeting of Bow Bells chapter, Daughters of the British Empire, has been changed to Wednesday, November 17, at 8 p. m., in the Girls Community club, officers announced last week. Miss Amy, Harding will show pictures of a recent trip she made to the British isles. A social hour also is planned. All visitors from British, Can adian or Australian birth or an cestry are invited. Report Progress On "Death Trap Project of Groups Shady Cove Mrs. Dan Krotz reported on a "death trap" cam paign being conducted in the Shady Cove area during a meet ing recently of the Steelhead post and auxiliary held at the Post home at Shady Cove. The project is being conducted through the month of November. The campaign, in which the Lady Lions and the Parent Teachers association members of that district are working, is by a house-to-house canvass for the removal of old ice boxes and filling-in of old wells and re moval of other "death traps" for small children. It is hoped by those conduct ing the campaign that other groups in this' area will also make such canvasses. Coopera tion from the home owners has been very good, those in 'charge reported. During the joint meeting post members made final plans for a turkey shoot to be conducted No vember 21 at Trail. This will be a merchandise shoot and anyone interested is invited. A traffic control of Shady Cove also is be ing conducted by the men. The auxiliary members ap proved a membership petition for Mrs. Zella Tullis of Trail. . Mrs. Dale Sawyer reported on a sewing project and it was sug gested for the next month that meetings would be held each Wednesday of the week' and those attending should take sack lunches. After the meetings the post joined the auxiliary and refresh ments were served. Those on the refreshment com mittee were Mrs. Krotz, Mrs. Velda King and. Mrs. Andy Crandenberg. 4 Group Discusses Ideals. Purpose; Events Announced Alpha Lambda chapter of Ep- silon Sigma Alpha sorority met at the home of Mrs. Fred Stam men, 920 West Eleventh street, November 8. Mrs. 'Charles Jones, president, presided over the pro gram, which was a group discus sion of the ideals and purpose of the sorority, dating back to its original founding in 1928. Reports were given on the re cently sponsored rummage sale and the forthcoming baked foods sale, which will be held Decem ber 8. Mrs. Chester Peterson was appointed ways and means chairman to fill the unexpired term of Mrs. Willie Fischer. Correspondence was read re garding the sale of Easter seals in the spring and preliminary plans were made for this proj ect; Refreshments were served by Mrs. Sammen following the bus iness meeting. Members are reminded to take their favorite recipes to the next meeting of the sorority, which will be held November 22 at the home of Mrs. William Raymond, 728 Beekman avenue. . Oak Grove Club . To Plan Party Oak Grove Neighborhood Hub will hold a business meeting at the home of Mrs. L. P. Crocker, 3355 Jacksonville highway, Tuesday November 6, at 1 p.m. Plans will be made for the an nual Christmas party and birth days will be observed. A social hour will follow the business meeting. .
