TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, November 10. 1984 is'' nr i tauiornia Kaiiroaa To Strike on Friday Cleveland (U.R) Engi neers on the Northwest Pacific railroad, running between Ti buron and Eureka, Calif., sched uled a strike today, effective at 12:01 a.m. (PST) this Friday. Grand Chief Engineer Guy L. Brown of the BLE announced the strike through. 'the 'union's Cleveland headquarters. Brown himself now is in the Canadian Northwest. Brown said the union has long been negotiating working rule grievances for the past year, vith the mediation board mak ing two fruitless attempts to settle the dispute. He said North- west Pacific's parent line, South ern Pacific, already has the rule? changes in effect. About 100 engineers will be affected. .1 Northwest Pacific carries, two passenger runs a day pver its 276-mile route, but most of its business is hauling lumber and minerals. v- E.H. Hedrick Elected To SOHS Directorate ; E. H. Hedrick, superintendent of Medford schools, was elected a director of the Southern Ore gon Historical Society, Inc., at the organization's monthly meet ing last night. Hedrick's election fills the board vacancy caused by the recent death of Mrs. Frances Cochran. The curator, Mrs. Myrtle P. Lee reported that visitation, at the Jacksonville Museum, which is administered by the society, continues at a heavy rate,-2,081 having registered there in Oct ober. Average monthly visitation- since opening of the mu seum has been 3,258, and the daily average 109. Winter visitation hours at the museum are from 1 to 5 p.m., weekdays and noon to 5 pjn,, on Former Resident Hurt When Auto Leaves Road Louis Kadas, Riddle, who for merly operated the Highway club in Medford, was hospital ized last night after the car he was driving left the road, hit a bank and rolled over, according to state police. . Electric Power From Atom Expected Soon Pasadena, Calif. "(U.R) Lewis L. Strauss, chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, today foresaw atomic energy as a practical source of electrical power m "only 10 years . . .'or perhaps not 'so long." , "There are a number of ideas and designs for obtaining elec trical power from atom fission," the retired admiral said last night in a speech before the Cathobc Press Council's "ban quet of the year." He said the ideas and designs would be developed with the aim that when we have reached the point where coal and oil are scarcer ana more expensive, they will be able to supplement them. : "We are just at the small be ginning of trying to apply -the great energy of atomic reac tion," Strauss said. , Nervous Bandit Jakes $25,158 From Bank Boss Miami Beach (U.R) A ner vous bandit forced the manager of the Chase Federal Savings and Loan Association to go from window to window, collecting money today and escaped with $25,158 in cash. Manager Robert Swick said the loss was insured. Oregon Mesabi Timber Tract Sale Revealed Seattle (U.R) Sale of more than 1,000,000 board feet of tim ber, in Lincoln county,. Ore., has been concluded here by William E. Boeing, founder of ) Boeing Airplane Co. - Blyth and Co., national invest ment house, said it had pur chased the capital stock of Boe ing's Oregon -Mesabi Co., which owns the timber. The purchase price was reported to be between $12,000',000 and $15,000,000. Blyfli spokesmen said their company plans to sell the stock to the Georgia-Pacific, Plywood Co., owner- of considerable tim ber adjacent to the Oregon Me sabi tract. :-.'.-.B- The sale by Blyth would make Georgia-Pacific the owner of one of the largest private timber stands in the United States and give it enough timber to be log ged "forever" on a sustained yield basis. ' -i Einstein Would Be Plumber or Peddler New-York (U.R) Dr. Al bert Einstein said today if he were younger he would become "a plumber or a ,peddler be cause of the situation facing scientists in this country now. In a letter published in. the Reporter magazine, Dr. Einstein said he would choose such a ca reer "in the hope to find that modest degree of . independence still available under present circumstances." Barron, Tulsa, Okla., brought the twin-engined plane down on. its nose and left wheels at Glenview Naval Air Station yesterday after circling 68 minutes in an effort to free the right landing gear. , Earthquake. Rocks Northern California , Ukiah, Calif. (U.R) A sharp earthquake shook parts of Mendocino and Lake counties in Northern California today. First reports indicated . there was no serious damage. The temblor was felt here and at Lakeport about 10:07 a.m. (PST). Ukiah residents flooded newspaper and police switch boards with phone calls report ing the shake.
