'' 7-' ' 7 This new service would ' be operated on an experimental ba sis, similar to first class mail-by-air experiments already being conducted between cnicago, ew York, Washington and Florida. i The nroDOsed rate for the western service is 18.98 cents for each mile an airline carries a ton' of first class mail. The airlines involved are the American Northwest, Trans World, United and -Western. They have eight days in which to object to the proposed rate. The 20 cities which would be served by the experiment are Seattle, Wash., Portland, Salem, Bend, Redmond, Eugene, Med ford, Klamath Falls, Ore.; San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento; Stockton, Modesto, Merced, Sa linas, Fresno, Visalia, Bakers field, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego, Calif. Mayor Tells of Being Accused BySheppard Cleveland U.PJ Mayor J. Spencer Houk of Bay Village told on the witness stand today how Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard had pointed the finger of suspicion at him as the bludgeon-murderer of Sheppard's pregnant wife, Marilyn.- Houk, who had been a close friend and neighbor of the Shep pards before the July 4 murder, testified he had pleaded with the husband to confess "if he had done it." He said Sheppard replied he could not have done it and in stead told him there was an "in terest" in him as a suspect. The state accuses the 30-year-old osteopath-surgeon of beating his wife to death after a quarrel over his attentions to other wom en, particularly to Susan Hayes, 24, a red-haired laboratory tech nician. The accident occurred ,m fog on the old highway south of Gold Hill when the Turner car hit the back of the logging truck, driven by Floyd Donald Doland Jr., route 2, box 515, Gold Hill. Short Creek Men Slated in Court Kingman, Ariz U.R) Nine men from the once-polygamous Arizona community of Short Creek must show cause why their probation should not be revoked at a hearing tentatively set for Nov. 22. The nine men were reported to be . among the 27 men who pleaded guilty Nov. 30, 1953, to a charge of conspiracy following a raid by state officers on the Short Creek community. The Mohave county adult pro bation officer filed the petition for revocation of their probation yesterday after an investigation at Short Creek. It was a condi tion of probation that the men pleading guilty would refrain from living with their plural wives. ' ;". The Short Creek raid attract ed world-wide attention July 26, 1953, when about 100 Arizona peace officers descended upon the town, which straddles the Arizona-Utah border. Hood River Man Gets fk Reclamation Award Portland U.R) Edward E Lage, Hood River, past president of the Oregon .Reclamation urn- crress. was awarded a life mem bership in the National Recla mation association at the group s banquet here last nlgnt. Two other reclamation offi cials were similarly honored. They were Frank A. Banks, dis trict manager of the Columbia Basin division of the Bureau of Reclamation, and Dan B. Hunter, Dove Creek, Colo. About $500 Earned For UMC at Concert About $500 for United Med ford Crusade agencies were de rived last "night from a benefit concert . by Arthur Lee Simp- kins, tenor, and his accompanist, Felix De Cola. The concert was held at the Medford High school. The singer and pianist appeared through the courtesy , of the Rogue Valley Country club, where they are performing dur ing their stay in Medford. The pianist also furnished numerous selections. ' Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce r members .. were in charge of tickets, promotion and arrangements for the benefit. Tony Manno, UMC president, introduced the singer and point ed cut that through the help from various service club's in his ycuth he(had been helped in re ceiving his voice training. The tenor also expressed the hope that he may be in Medford for a similar UMC performance next year. .. Flanders7 Brother Gets AEC Clearance - Chicago HJ.R) Donald A. Flanders, atomic scientist and brother of Sen. Ralph Flanders (R-Vt.) has received an uncon ditional" security clearance from the Atomic Energy Commission, the Chicago Sun-Tunes reported today. " - . Flanders is a mathematician at the AEC's Argonne National Lab oratory near Chicago. . The clearance carried an-im plicit agreement that no mem ber of Flanders family should communicate in any . manner with Alger Hiss, now nearing the end of a five-year federal prison term for perjury, the newspaper said. The sister of Flanders wife was once married to Thomas Fansler, who is the brother of Mrs. Alger Hiss. Fansler and Flanders sister-in-law were di vorced in 1941.
