Eisenhower is doing more 10 solve racial problems "than any President since Lincoln," accord ing to Assistant Secretary of Labor Ernest Wilkins. . Wilkins, speaking at a Citizens for Eisenhower rally Friday night, said the President was solving segregation problems "with deeds." "Segregation in the armed forces is being stamped out rap- Idly," Wilkins said, "and at the President's insistence, Negroes are serving In all branches of services, and now have better chances for advancement.'' Knight of Califor nia refused Saturday to extra dite Antonio Martini, 64, to New York to face a 35-year-old first degree murder charge. . Mahon said Saturday "It would be very convenient' if the man was not able to serve because of Illness, otherwise, his presence might jeopardize the conduct of proceedings and offer grounds for a mistrial later. Mahon also said he and his staff considered the identifica tion of the juryman to be "pretty definite." Revenues to the counties are heavy when the timber is harvested from such classified lands through, a 12V4 per cent tax. ' ' In reporting this, ' the Labor Department Friday night attrib uted the increase partly to "sea sonal" or "temporary" lay-offs in the textile, food processing, trade, fabricated metals and ma chinery industries. ; Delay Seen . It said the filing of claims postponed- from the previous week due to the closing of of fices for the Columbus Day holi day also was a factor. ' - Insured unemployment rose by 21,800 to 1,480,000 during the week ending Oct. 16, after de clining the previous week. The department said re-scheduling of reports because of the Columbus Day holiday "ob scured" a general downward trend.
