Reports on Work ' In a report on other phases of the project, John Hatch, office engineer for the bureau at Med ford, reported that a three-man survey party is now working in the area of the south fork of Little Butte creek and Big Draw creek where the Howard prairie reservoir collection canal is to be situated. A five-member diamond drill crew Is working on the Howard damsite in two shifts, he contin ued. They are investigating foundation locations. Hatch reminded residents that the bureau is now engaged only In making plans for the Talent project. Appropriations for any actual work must be approved at the next session of congress. He said that no change in the pres ent office facilities will be made until construction appropriations are made. -Dam Repairs Due Hatch, who is also engineer on the Savage Rapids dam repair job, reported that repairs are expected to be completed before winter at the dam. Present work includes repairing the sluiceway floor, he added. "If the good weather holds up, the work should be done in about a week." he added. Dam rehabilitation Is ' under contract to the Young and Smith Construction company, Salt Lake City. They began the project a year ago last spring, but worked only , during certain seasons. Work was also delayed when two dirt coffer dams were washed out by high water. The first doctor of philosophy degree was awarded by Yale university in 186J. In 1892 wo men were admitted to Yale as doctor degree candidates In the field of the philosophies. ' Cily Superintendent Tells Chamber Men About Traffic Study City Supt. Robert Duff re ported on the recently-completed State Highway department survey of Medford traffic prob lems at Friday's meeting of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce board of directors. He explained the highlights of the survey, Including the arterial street grid and Bear Creek free way, and also discussed off street parking. Vernon Thorpe, director of public works, is pre paring a parking study, which will be done within the next 60 days. . .. Chamber directors expressed their approval of the survey and related the Initial effort about four years ago by the Chamber to obtain such a survey to aid in the orderly develop ment of the city. President Walter Garner pointed out that such projects take time and con tinued work. : , . Duff told the group that the "unless something is done with the survey, It will' be just an other report to hit the desk." He added that there are now certain funds available to Install some of the traffic signals rec ommended by the survey. The directors, in other busi ness, approved rental of the new animated technicolor film, "It's Everbody's Business," for two months. The film was shown at the meeting and explains how the American business system works. It is recommended by the U. S. Chamber of Commerce for schools, social, . business and community organizations.
