Southern California has the tightest .around defense while UCLA is tops in pass and total defense. The Trojans were al lowed but 92 yards a game rush ing, followed by California, 126, and. UCLA, . 132.9. UCLA has given up but 38.5 yards a game passing with Ore gon, 73, and Stanford, 74, next tn line. The Bruins have allowed 171 yards in total defense to 201 for Southern Cal and 244.8 for Oregon. UCLA also shares the lead, with Washington in an other defensive department, In terceptions. Tebbetts To Skipper ; Cincinnati New York (UJ0 Popular Birdie Tebbetts, brandishing, a new two-year contract, stepped today into the job as manager of the Cincinnati Redlegs left .va cant by the firing of Rogers Hornsby. "The fans of Cincinnati will like Birdie Tebbetts," promised Redlegs' General Manager Gabe Paul after announcing the hiring of the former American League catcher. Tebbetts, 42, is getting his first crack at managing in the major leagues after serving only a sin gle season of apprenticeship as the pilot of a minor league team. He guided Indianapolis, a Cleve land Indian's farm team, to fourth place in the American As sociation this year. Terms Not Told The terms. of Tebbetts' con tract were not revealed, other than the fact it would run through the 1999 season. .Tebbetts, who lives in Nashua, N. H., said, "I am an optimist who hopes that the club will finish in-the first division next season." That would be an im provement of at least two places from the Redlegs' sixth place finish this season. The new skipper served more than 16 years as a catcher in the American League with the De troit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Indians, building up a reputation as one of the smartest handlers of pitchers in the bus iness.
