New York (UJ0 Popular
Birdie Tebbetts, brandishing, a
new two-year contract, stepped
today into the job as manager of
the Cincinnati Redlegs left .va
cant by the firing of Rogers
Hornsby.
"The fans of Cincinnati will
like Birdie Tebbetts," promised
Redlegs' General Manager Gabe
Paul after announcing the hiring
of the former American League
catcher.
Tebbetts, 42, is getting his first
crack at managing in the major

He guided Indianapolis, a Cleve
land Indian's farm team, to
fourth place in the American As

Terms Not Told
The terms. of Tebbetts' con

than the fact it would run
through the 1999 season.
.Tebbetts, who lives in Nashua,
N. H., said, "I am an optimist
who hopes that the club will
finish in-the first division next
season." That would be an im

from the Redlegs' sixth place
finish this season.
The new skipper served more
than 16 years as a catcher in the
American League with the De
troit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and
Cleveland Indians, building up a
reputation as one of the smartest
handlers of pitchers in the bus
iness.
