Defend Pram C.miaies'ial Hollywood OJ.R) Audrey Hepburn is one of the few new grade A movie stars today, and her success nirTTg apearheads a V' new trend in V' movie queens because "I al- ways thought l was was ae- finitely ugly." This new luminary be came true film star when she ca - star- AJtoe Marty with Greg gory Feck in "Roman Holiday," and as movie fans saw, she has big eyes, wing-like eye-brows, an oversized mouth and a crook ed tooth. In person she turns out to be evqn thinner, tall (five foot sev en) and virtually flat-chested. "I'm a size 32," she confessed. But Miss Hepburn proves that true beauty isn't a sweater size or a toothpaste ad smile. Her poise, grace, charm from within and 'unusual looks have made her an exciting newcomer in the Bette Davis-type school of personalities who can also act. Mas Complex "I never thought I'd land in pictures with a face like mine. I've had a complex all my life about being definitely ugly," she said in her clipped English accent. "I always was improving my self by making the most of my self, experimenting with differ ent make-up and so forth. That was when I was between 13 and 16, an age when you mind ao terribly what you look like. I looked so awful to myself I never thought I'd success. I ha ed my nose. "But now," she said with a m Up "I'm iiuw) tn it " Audrey was born in Holland of English parents. She went to London to study ballet when she was 13. In 1948, because "I was threadbare and cooldn't af ford to tour with the ballet for $13 a week," she took musical comedy and film jobs in London. Worked Hard She was working in a film in France when famed author Colette spotted her and insisted she star in Colette's play, "Gigi" on Broadway. Then came "Ro man Holiday" and stardom, "at though it wasn't overnight I worked hard for 12 years." OJ.R) A residen tial resort is being built on the shore of Lake Michigan, eight miles west of here, for the ex clusive use of Negro families. The resort, which will be built over a three-year period, calls for construction of about 800 cottages, with about 200 to be completed this year. The final number to be built will depend upon the demand, according to officials of the Sargol Realty Co., Chicago. A sales and promotional or ganization headed by Jesse Owens, holder of four world track records, will sell the prop erties at a cost of about S4.000 each. FARMERS! (U.PJ Michigan State College research ers here say whole milk can be kept in the average home freezer for as long as six weeks. Two MSC scientist, G. M. Trout and J. C. Boyd stored milk in paper containers in deep freezers for extended periods, varying the temperatures, times and types of milk. They found that homogenized and pasteurized milk stored at 20 degrees below zero kept its flavor at six weeks. They also found out that milk stored at under 33 degrees above zero in an ordinary refrigerator from two to six weeks keeps well. ARMY MAN TO COLLEGE . Davenport, la. . (U.R) Vandy Farrell, 58-year-old re tired army major, exchanged his officer's cap today for a college freshmen's "beanie." Farrell, three months out of the army, began classes at St. Ambrose college. He said he would wear a "beanie" like all the other freshmen. "It's not the chapeau but what's under it that counts,' he said. Oaad Una on Classified Ada: (SO fxn. for following day; 10 ajn. HUGH PRT7ETT Artranomar, Exunaloa Division -Oregon Higher BdacaUon Syitam "There is magic in the autumn When the harvest moon hangs high." Again we have come to that delightful time of year when the genial face of the big harvest moon for more days than usual, makes the early evenings glori ous with an abundance of yellow light. This is the season that long has inspired poets to declare that harvest moon is "nature's gift to lovers and laborers." Harvest moon is usually de fined as the full moon occurring nearest the time of the autumnal equinox. This year the equinox, the date when the day and the night are equal, comes Septem ber 23. Scientifically speaking, this is the time when the ap parent position of the sun crosses the celestial equator, the imagi nary line on the sky directly moon occurs on the evening of over the earth's equator. Full September 22. The few days be fore and after the date of full moon are known as the "season of the harvest moon." We are in that season right now. Somewhat Larger This year the harvest moon will be somewhat larger in ap pearance and more luminous than is often the case for this moon, due to the fact that on the very evening of full moon our neighborhood orb will be at its perigee, or the nearest to the earth during the month. This distance will be 221,700 miles, or about 31,000 miles nearer than when farthest from us. This gives approximately 30 per cent greater brightness. The harvest moon of 1949 was nearly at its RESTORE BEAUTY TO Your FLOORS WITH A RENTED SANDER City te Operate Clem tmi DaatleM Lew Rental Rates We aeedw ytMnn . nnw nt fins fnfUaMnf. greatest distance, or o'pogee. In some localities it may seem that the latter part of September is rather late for harvest The term is said, however, to have originated in northern England and Scotland where the harvest ing of crops was on in full sway at that time. The inhabitants were industrious people and worked late into the evening when bright moonlight was available. And the characteris tics of harvest moon gave more early evenings of moonlight than at other times of the year. The people did not understand the scientific reason but assumed that a kind Providence provided it. Takes Northward Orbit On an average throughout a year, moonrise occurs any day 31 minutes later than the pre ceding day. But around full moon in September the moon on rising is on that part of its path which approaches the eastern horizon at a very gentle angle. As a result, its orbital motion each day does not take it east ward as fast as usual, but con siderably northward also. This condition in middle lati tudes gives a retardation of moonrise sometimes of only 15 or 20 minutes instead of the average SI minutes. But In Scot land this is often only three min utes. If old Luna rises one night at 8 p.m., it will "pop up" the next evening at 8:03 p.m. Daad Una for Sunday Cliariflad la at noon Saturday.
