He's a bar ber and here is what he thinks of it: "It's the most miserable bus iness in the world, bartering. You stand up all day if you want to make any money, and you can't even get loose to grab a sandwich." Havens, son of a barber, be gan cropping craniums when he was 13 and is believed to have cut more than 220,000 heads of hair. He made his remarks on the eve of his retirement. Mort' first customer was a local saloonkeeper- who asked for the then 10-cent shave. Non-Talker "He told me, 'don't be nervous kid. and I was doing all right until I got down around the chin," Haven recalled. "He had bristles on him like a broom, but I got them all off all right" Havens credits his success as a barber to the ability to keep quiet. "I never believed in this ear bending barbering," he said. "If a guy wanted to talk, I talked. But I never opened up until I got my cue. Some just want their hair cut." Although Havens is putting the clippers and comb away for fishing, loafing and baseball duty, he said hell probably see the top of a few more heads, at least one being that of a fellow barber whose hail he has been cutting for 16 years. Chiloquin (U.PJ A school teacher provided an answer Saturday to report! that "fly tag saucers" were seen in this area recently. Mrs. Gail Ridanaur said that the Tulana Williamson River ranch, located is the vicinity, has installed three large searchlights to discour age gees and ducks from stopping over in grain fields. She said these lights, or re flections from them, probably led to the "saucer" reports. The Tims Has Come for CHRISTMAS CARDS Order now! The druggists had somehow learned that it is dangerous stuff for a dumb lay man to monkey with. Yet sodium citrate was popularly used ' in the modification of cow's milk for infant feeding a grain or two in each ounce in the days of the twelve-cylinder car. And now, as recorded in the talk here August 24, they are after dear old boric acid, charg ing that it is poisonous and I don't know what all. Frankly I had harbored a sneaking suspicion that the mo tive behind these efforts to take away our cheap home medicines and compel us to buy expensive nostrums was the more popular with pretty package dealers be cause they thought it might ham per my teaching of domestic medical economy. But now tha't they're after boric acid I'm not so sure of that. I haven't made people buy more than ten or fifteen tons of boric acid in the past decade, I'm sure. Not more than a million readers, surely, have in that time followed my instructions to put agjo ;-, et4r- ' -"-mcvttMM two or three drops of a solution of 10. grains of bone acid in one fluid ounce of pure grain alco hol in the ear each night and morning, for chronic running ear, using a blunt, dropper and .1 .t 1 a . always wanning tne solution to a comfortable degree by stand ing the vial in hot water for a while before using. When I was an honest doctor compound tincture of lavender was official in the United States Pharmacopoeia under the title Tincture Lavandulae Composite.
